Carpe Diem: Two Book Sales

First, Fortress Press is having a massive ebook/Kindle sale through the end of April. There’s no link to the sale itself at Amazon, rather the 1500 (!) books on sale are listed in a pdf here. My suggestions-

  • Paul and the Faithfulness of God (normally $60 in paper)

  • Introduction to the Hebrew Bible
    • I have an earlier edition of this. It’s what many colleges use in their Old Testament/Hebrew Bible intro courses. Very readable.
• Luke Timothy Johnson
  • The Writings of the New Testament 
    • Also kind of a college course Intro
  • Oxford’s Very Short Introduction to the New Testament
• Ben Witherington
• Dietrich Bonhoeffer (German preacher who opposed Hitler, quoted in recent General Conferences)
• The Social Science Commentary on the Bible series
• E.P Sanders books (he helped pionneer the New Perspective on Paul, see my post here)
  • Perhaps most accessible is Paul: A Very Short Introduction
• Mark S. Smith (a gentleman and a scholar, now at Princeton)
  • The Priestly Vision of Genesis 1 (a book I’ve often recommended and will reference often in my own)
• Some of the Continental Commentary series, including Leviticus by Jacob Milgrom

Second,  Logos holds its own March Madness wherein different authors are pitted against each other. The higher the author in the bracket, the greater the discount on the books. The “tournament” has ended so, all of these authors are discounted, from 30% up through April 14. It’s a mix of modern and “classic” authors.   • IVP Bible Background Commentary- Old Testament  (1 volume)
  • ZIBBCOT Series (a commentary for laypeople focused on cultural and literary background.)
• Joseph Fitzmeyer
  • 6 volumes in the Anchor Bible Commentary
  • Dead Sea Scrolls material

• Raymond Brown (like Fitzmeyer, a Catholic priest and series New Testament scholar.)
  • Introduction to the New Testament (which is listed twice, once on sale, once not. This is excellent)
