Here is the first review of ‘Is There a Doctor?’
“I wish someone had given me this book when I was starting my theological studies—-but of course, it hadn’t been written yet. All the students I mentor will not only have this book, but read it. But this book is not just for students–it’s also useful for pastors or any serious Christian. The lessons within it apply not only to scholarship, but also to life. It’s classic Witherington— full of good sense, entertaining, critical, and deeply spiritual. I cannot recommend this book too highly.”
Robert Stewart, Professor of Philosophy and Theology
New Orleans Baptist Seminary

I loved reading this book and wish I could have had this information years ago. Very insightful and has great advice for those entering seminary. I only wish this book would have included a bibliography or reading list of books that would be helpful to a young scholar.
Hi Jerome
The book DOES have a bibliography of books. Ben recommends 20 books to read before you leave town to go do your Phd.
I thought it was great. Maybe you could share with us what the job market for full time bible professors is like right now, and whether or not there are scholarship funds and grants out there for PhD level work.
Also, how many guys in their mid forties or older get accepted into a PhD NT program?
Wish I’d had something like that too. I think it would have helped to give me direction while in seminary. ‘Course it’s not too late since I don’t have a doctorate–yet–but may work on it some day.
I like, I like. The word scholar is tossed about so loosely these days and very often the scholars that are supposed to be are nothing more than copycat wannabees.
There are so many of you guys and dolls out their in the world, but in the words of Daniel Amos: “Who are the real girls?”
Excellent! (definitely one for my library)
I recall Dr Carson discussing his own journey and if his story is anything to go by, the road to genuine scholarship maketh the heart humble and wise.
Peace,
Eric.
Thanks, brother Ben! I’ll be happy to give this a read!
