(This was C.K. Barrett’s Methodist church which he served in Darlington before going on to become a professor at Durham University).

I know some Churches, and in varying degrees I think this is true of all Churches, which in fact work on a very different scale of values. They are great because they are wealthy, they are great because they are influential, they are great because they have a
magnificent history, they are great because the right people go there, they
are great (all too few of them) because they have large congregations. But
that is no true scale of values. A Church is great insofar as it is faithful to its
Lord, and fighting the good fight. And it follows that there are back street
missions which are greater Churches than some of Methodism’s most splendid
