Remembering to Remember

We don't know how to relate to one another. This became evident by the end of my first day of tarot readings at Isis Books. We don't really know how to be in relationships, which is interesting to me because we are in relationships. Our lives are chalk-full of relationships. Yet, somehow, they remain a great mystery to us. People who come for readings (a first observation) are seeking clarify on what to do, not what to think or believe. They want to know how to handle matters of … [Read more...]

Awaking Me Loudly: Seduced By the Tarot

Transformation is a slow process, and challenging to describe. Best to be on the lookout for that initial spark of change, and then follow it wherever it leads you. The Chariot: The pursuit of the Divine is a series of sublimations; a refinement of the base; lead to gold. - March 29th, 2009 The tarot has been an initiator of change for me on many occasion. In the early months of 2009, at a moment of transition for the public voice of Weiser Books, known on Facebook and Twitter as … [Read more...]

WARNING: Call on a God, and He just might show up.

I drove an hour to Malibu for my Spring Equinox ritual. The location was a secluded, public beach called "El Matador." The site opened at 8, and I arrived just a few minutes after the top of the hour. I followed the dirt trail down the edge of the cliff side, wearing jeans and work boots and too many layers. I’d overdressed, fearing that the ocean would bring a chill to my skin, but the sun was already up and it was plenty warm.   Once at the bottom, I started searching out a … [Read more...]

Chew on THIS, Pagans.

We set fire to the kitchen last night. Metaphorically, I mean. The conversation started while I was preparing dinner, and it continued on throughout the meal and into the clean-up. I woke up thinking about it, and I feel compelled to share some of it with you, my readers; my community of dig-deepers. I'm not sure how to tie all of this together just yet, and I feel like some of these ideas may be much more foundational for me than I'm even aware. This may be future book-stuff, to be … [Read more...]

I, Teo Bishop, am Coming Out as Teo Bishop

profile.jpg

It was my first time being fingerprinted and I couldn't stop giggling. I wasn't drunk. I wasn't being arrested, either. I was in the police station by choice, and the man who was gently rolling my inked fingers across the regulation fingerprint-card was taking it all in stride. "You know," I said, "this action, when taken out of its normal context, is totally neutral. It typically has so much stigma attached to it, but it's really nothing!" (giggle) "This is actually kind of fun!" I don't … [Read more...]

When Psychic Attack Hits Home

Psychic Attack

It was a normal morning at home. I was reading a book about Proto-Indo-Europeans while my dogs slept on the couch next to me, and my husband was off at our local metaphysical store, trading a psychic reading with an astrologer. Admittedly, our "normal" is not really prime-time normal. I looked up from what I was doing, and I saw my husband walking toward the house from his car with a horrible expression on his face. Agony, perhaps? Pain? He came in and I asked him what was … [Read more...]

Doing It Alone on the Equinox

profile.jpg

I find that the best way to get my house clean is to throw a party. My desk may be covered with books and papers, my laundry bin filled, and my various interests -- knitting and sewing being those that come with the most accessories -- all sprawled out across the dining room table, but as soon as I decide to invite people over? POOF!! I'm a bearded Mary Poppins, snapping my fingers at the furniture. Before the song is over, my house looks marvelous. All it took was a spoon full of sugar … [Read more...]

The Spiritual, the Mundane, and the Cash Money

profile.jpg

Some days, it's all we can do not to break. Yesterday felt like one of those days. I've done well to keep my focus on matters of spiritual growth since returning from my Pagan pilgrimage. I've kept my daily practice, and I've delighted in the conversations we've had here on the blog about leadership, purpose and the wants and needs of the Pagan community. I've approximated the feeling of being swept up in the fervor of rituals, workshops and sacred dancing, as best I could. But yesterday … [Read more...]

Yes, but what do we NEED from our Pagan leaders?

profile.jpg

The discussion around the post, What do we want from our Pagan leaders? was enlightening for me. Admittedly, I have a close, personal connection to the subject, as I'm seeking to discover what it might mean that I am, as a friend told me, "called to lead" in some way. This comment really stood out to me: I think that's one of the basic yardsticks of spiritual maturity: can what you offer to others be about what's needed rather than all about self-promotion? Or self-effacement, or … [Read more...]
