Mr. President, When Should I Expect Your Call?

Dear President Obama,

You don’t know my telephone number, but I hope your staff is busy trying to find it. Ever since you called Sandra Fluke after Rush Limbaugh called her a slut, I figured I might be next.  You explained to reporters you called her because you were thinking of your two daughters, Malia and Sasha.  After all, you didn’t want them to think it was okay for men to treat them that way:

“One of the things I want them to do as they get older is engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on,” you said.  “I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way. And I don’t want them attacked or called horrible names because they’re being good citizens.”

And I totally agree your kids should be able to speak their minds and engage the culture.  I look forward to seeing what good things Malia and Sasha end up doing with their lives.

But here’s why I’m a little surprised my phone hasn’t rung.  Your $1,000,000 donor Bill Maher has said reprehensible things about my family.  He’s made fun of my brother because of his Down’s Syndrome. He’s said I was “f—-d so hard a baby fell out.”  (In a classy move, he did this while his producers put up the cover of my book, which tells about the forgiveness and redemption I’ve found in God after my past – very public — mistakes.)

If Maher talked about Malia and Sasha that way, you’d return his dirty money and the Secret Service would probably have to restrain you.  After all, I’ve always felt you understood my plight more than most because your mom was a teenager.  That’s why you stood up for me when you were campaigning against Sen. McCain and my mom — you said vicious attacks on me should be off limits.

Yet I wonder if the Presidency has changed you.  Now that you’re in office, it seems you’re only willing to defend certain women.  You’re only willing to take a moral stand when you know your liberal supporters will stand behind you.

But…

What if you did something radical and wildly unpopular with your base and took a stand against the denigration of all women… even if they’re just single moms? Even if they’re Republicans?

I’m not expecting your SuperPAC to return the money.  You’re going to need every dime to hang on to your presidency.  I’m not even really expecting a call.  But would it be too much to expect a little consistency?  After all, you’re President of all Americans, not just the liberals.

I was a teenage parent as well… The public needs to be more forgiving. We all make mistakes and Bristol is doing GREAT for what her child’s father AND the public has put her through. Her mother is doing the best she can do as well With everyones hate towards her and her daughter. I would be pretty ticked off if it were my daughter and grand kid being degraded as well!!! YOU GO BRISTOL!!!

I cannot believe some of the mean comments that people are posting here – especially women. It is still hard for me to wrap my head around the venom some women spew forth when confronted with Sara Palin and her children. The most hated person on earth – as far as liberals are concerned – is a strong independent woman making choices in life based on core religious and/or moral values who chooses to raise her children – ALL of them – NOT just the “perfect” ones. Alicia’s comments of “Like your mother, the only thing you’re really good at is getting attention. And just like her, you have no substance” is just bazaar – does she know you and your Mother personally? Otherwise – how could she know anything about how you really are? And “Shady Lady” – my God – what is wrong with you? So in your mind this “bloodclot” you refer to: In your opinion when does that bloodclot actually become human? And are you saying that because God allows miscarriages to happen that we can assume the role of God as well? I can only conclude that a lot of liberal women are mean, nasty harpies that hate conservative women and unborn children. You people are scary.

Maybe you should expect his call when you’ve done something with your life other than spread for a loser out of wedlock and ride your idiot mother’s coattails.

Stop being so full of yourself. Your not that important! The country has more important issues to deal with than worrying about you.

Dear Mr. President you may be looking for my number too. I don’t have words that describe what I think of you at this very moment. First President ever in history thinking Gay Marriage is ok. Are you kidding??
I don’t think too much of that.

I mean, your situations are pretty different.

Sandra Fluke is a private citizen who testified about her experience, and Rush called her a slut because of her opinion. It was totally uncalled for, and a very public attack on a private citizen’s political opinions. It is extremely important that people feel that they can testify about legislation without being attacked– even crucial to to democratic process.

Obama’s probably equally unhappy when any other women is attacked– including you. But I imagine he doesn’t have much time for anything, including his own family. He prioritized Sandra Fluke not because he felt responsible for Rush’s comments, but because she was being personally attacked for having political beliefs that other’s disagree with.

Maher’s comment’s were certainly as outrageous as Rush’s, but they were an attack on you, personally. Maher may know of you because of your mother’s political career, and feel inclined to insult you because of your conservative beliefs, but his comments were not direct responses to anything you have said about politics. That doesn’t change how hurtful and wrong they are, but it does mean that they were entirely baseless.

So even though Maher is a big financial supporter of Obama, I don’t really think Obama is a obligated to call you. (It would certainly be very nice of him to though.) Maher made those comments representing himself alone– they weren’t made with the permission or collaboration of Obama. Maher’s money was not an attempt to sway Obama’s opinion about you, or affect what he says. It was meant to help Obama be re-elected, and wasn’t enough to give him a true say in anything Obama does.

I think the situation is probably more complex that was originally presented, but I don’t really think he’s showing any preference toward liberal women. Sandra Fluke is symbolic of anyone with a political opinion– I think partisanship was evident in her treatment, not Obama’s response.

At the same time, I really don’t want to dismiss Maher’s comments as acceptable, because they weren’t, not at all. But I think Maher, not Obama, is the one who should (though probably won’t) apologize to you.
