Defending the “Palin Pick”

Most of you know I’d rather post photos of my family and write about Alaska than talk about politics.  But after reading and watching some recent commentary, I can’t help myself.

The chattering class is talking – endlessly – about Mitt Romney’s choice of a Vice Presidential running mate.  Will he choose a Governor?  A Senator?  A Congressman?  There are many good options for Governor Romney – and all of them have already been dissected in the media – with a list of pros and cons beside their names.  One is too “northern,” another is too “boring,” another is too “white.”  I’ve lived through the scrutiny the family will endure, and it can be a nightmare.

I don’t pretend to know the best pick for Governor Romney.  But there’s one theme that keeps coming up, and it’s ridiculous: that Governor Romney should avoid Senator McCain’s mistake in his Vice Presidential running mate decision.

Chris Cillizza brought it up here:

If you buy that basic way of thinking about the race, it makes it more likely that Romney’s main criteria in picking a running mate will be to do no harm, to avoid the public relations debacle that Senator John McCain (Ariz.) courted when he named former Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential pick in 2008.

Later, he describes the GOP as a “party still trying to get out from under the Palin pick.”

Talking Points Memo in an article titled, “Why Mitt Romney Won’t Take GOP Down Another VP Rabbit Hole” quoted a strategist who said my mom is “a case study on what not to do. The McCain campaign really screwed up by going in and picking someone who was just gonna shake up the ticket when they should have picked someone who’s safe.”

In other words, the pundits say Senator McCain made a huge mistake. But where’s the evidence to back up this conventional wisdom?  I’m not a pundit, but I remember the race.  I was there. I remember the frenzied crowds after my mom joined the ticket.  I remember the huge fundraising surge.  I remember her convention speech.  I even remember how McCain/Palin took a polling lead over Obama/Biden.

Then the economy melted down.  You could feel people’s fear.  You could see it in their eyes on the trail.  McCain suspended his campaign to rush back to Washington to deal with the crisis.  A lot of people criticized him, but he did what he thought was right.  And guess what, the economy was melting down while Republicans were in charge.

Take a good look at this list of polls.  Shortly after Senator McCain picked my mom, the polls turned favorable.  But he lost the lead for good the week he suspended his campaign, and we never got it back.  Not in a single poll.

But even then, my Mom helped.  A lot.  She raised millions of dollars that helped us fight hard until the last moment. And Senator McCain actually performed better among those for whom the “Palin Pick” was very important to their voteImmediate post-election polling shows a large majority of Republicans thought my mom helped Senator McCain and more than 90% had a favorable or very favorable view of her.

(By the way, pundits, do you guys do much research before slamming my mom?  It didn’t take me long at all to find the facts that refute your so-called “conventional wisdom.”)

OCTOBER 22, 2008: Mom greets supporters during a campaign rally at the Green High School Memorial Stadium in Ohio, with less than two weeks left before the election.

I don’t write this post to criticize Senator McCain – far from it.  He and my mom had an uphill battle against Obama who promised to stop the oceans’ rise and heal the planet. I honestly don’t think any Republican candidate could’ve beaten Obama in 2008.  It was the Democrats’ moment.

But 2012 is a Republican moment. Whomever Governor Romney picks will be better qualified to run the country than our current President.  And this time around, we’re not running against the hard-to-pin-down “hope and change,” we’re running against a President who can’t stop rising gas prices, much less rising oceans.

Please.

Mom answered the call to serve her country, energized the base, and inspired millions. Plus, she did it with good humor and grace.  I don’t know what else she could’ve reasonably be expected to do.

The economy was collapsing, and the Democrats had nominated “The One.”  My mom worked wonders, and it was such a joy watching her connect with Americans from coast to coast.  But she could not work miracles.

It’s been four years now since Senator McCain selected my mom, and he made the right choice. Who will Governor Romney select as his running mate?  Well, we’ve still got several months before we find out.

Whoever it turns out to be, I don’t envy the next vice-presidential nominee.

After all… Sarah Palin is a tough act to follow.

And then there is the fact that the McCain strategists tried to put a restraint on your mom when she wanted to campaign in Michigan?(pls. correct me if this info is wrong), one of the battleground states that their efffin strategists considered as lost.

If they only let her campaign in that state, it could have fired up the conservative base in the other states to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket and this might have won that election and freed us of this Obama nightmare..

I voted for Ronald Reagan in the 1980′s. After he left office, I abandoned the GOP.

After years of voting for Dem, Independents, and 3rd Party, I returned to the GOP in August of 2008. The ONLY REASON I came back was to support your mother. I did not return to the GOP to support the elitist good ol’ boys who chased me off from the Party so many years before….as far as I am concerned they are every bit as corrupt, greedy, ignorant, anti-freedom and unworthy as the Democrat Party. My support for the GOP begins and ends with Sarah Palin.

If Romney becomes the nominee I will NOT SUPPORT him unless the GOP and the GOP Media Machine starts treating your mother with respect and dignity. If Romney wants my vote, he better get anti-Palin folks like Karl Rove to sing your mother’s praises at the top of their lungs 24/7 on FOX, instead of trashing her with their false memes.

I will NOT vote for an anti-Palin party.

      I’m onboard with this comment.
I live in solid blue CA so it will be easy for me to withhold my vote from him and send my little message.

Excellent post. Thanks for reminding those whose memory seems to be selective and very faulty.

Great article, Bristol. I can see you have your mother’s ability to call it like it is! Not only did your mother help the ticket, she inspired a lot of people (like me) to play a more active role in politics.

Hang in there. In the end “Truth” ultimately wins out.

A daughter that love her mom…thank you for writing your post with fact not just words using the Sarah Palin to get people to read or listen to these that only know how to write or talk untruth…

you’re a good writer. keep it up. these media types kidding? yeah, McCain picking Joe Liebermann would’ve been a scream. He would lost by 25 pts. The one thing I thank McCain for other than his military service is that he introduced Sarah Palin to the nation and the world. you know what I find hilarious? before your mother came along no one gave a rat’s butt about the VP slot. now everywhere you look, someone is writing about it or talking about it on TV. Fox’s Brett Baier even has a segment in his show devoted to it interviewing all pols who are suspected to be on the short list. it’s getting ridiculous. but Romney is unlikely to make an exciting pick. he will play it safe. and if he does make an exciting pick, like you said I don’t envy that person either. because if Romney loses they will surely get the blame not Romney. -Mr.L

I think it is very prudent of Mitt Romney to carefully pick his VP because it WAS a mistake to pick Sarah Palin. Yes, she did add tremendous luster to what was becoming a lackluster campaign but McCain really did not know her; did not know what area of expertise she could add to the campaign or if he could even work well with her. The least the vetting team could have done was to consult elected officials from Alaska, Democrats and Republicans alike who could have attested to her leadership skills. I respect the opinion of one particular Republican of my acquaintence who embraces the Republican philosophy and takes his voting very seriously. He quietly told me he voted for Barack Obama for the sole reason that he felt McCain’s judgement in picking Sarah Palin was very flawed as she lacked experience and McCain really had no knowledge of her.

    • http://www.mrltavern.com Mr.L

Oh my dear you are certainly talking out of your hat & your comments are nothing but platitudes with nothing to back them up. McCain chose her for her expertise in energy as you may recall gas was 1.98 -2.02 which back then was thought as high nothing like where we’re at now. She had just signed AGIA & put ACES into law. If you’re really an Alaskan you should know that. McCain had ample knowledge of her since they met each other at a conference in 2007. get your facts straight.

Oh, Jeez, thank you. It burns me to the bone when folks try to say that gas was cheap under Dubya. I remember how high gas was. You know how? In 2006, I traveled two states away to pick up my husband from a military base after his year-long stint in Afghanistan, and I spent a friggin’ mint on gas. It was nearly $3.00 per gallon. I’ll never forget it.

          • otlset

I wish it was still that cheap.

Sarah Palin was the only thing that kept McCain competitive. When Sarah Palin was brought on board, the enthusiasm immediately changed .
Steve Schmidt was behind the moment polls prove really lost the 2008 election; it was Steve Schmidt’s disastrous decision to have Sen. John McCain suspend his campaign.
After the bailout vote, support for the Republican ticket collapsed.

    • otlset

This is crazy. Her emails of her time as governor testify to her competence! Sarah Palin had FAR more solid executive experience than the poseur Obama the fools in this country elected to office, even more executive experience than McCain! I have NO DOUBT she would have fulfilled the duties of Vice President with competency and flourish, unlike the gaffe-master doofus Biden embarrassing the country in that position now. And I have NO DOUBT she would make one of the best, most competent presidents ever, again unlike the incompetent empty-suit poseur in there now. This is because she would take the job seriously, and really WORK for America’s best interests, again unlike the party-boy lying campaigner currently sullying up the office.

Leadership skills? The woman had an 80% approval rating with the voters of Alaska…
I would not be surprised at all if the corrupt, pompous “elected officials” of Alaska didn’t like her.
Now, as for your friend….I think it’s hilarious that he thought a junior senator who voted “present” and picked Joe Biden to be his VP had better judgement than McCain. Indeed, Sarah Palin had more executive experience than all three men combined.

      • Gwen

Yeah, it was all those corrupt elected officials who wore buttons saying “Where’s Sarah?” long before she was tapped for vp. Many of you, outside of Alaska, are only listening to one side of the story. Unfortunately it’s a “false narrative.” The real narrative is that she phoned it in. A lot.

        • otlset

At least she did good things for the state, and not just vote “present” most of the time while obviously plotting to become president by penning two self-serving and hubristic memoirs at such an early stage in life like the full-of-himself Obama.

          • LMA

    Great post, as usual, Bristol!!
BUT…….it disappoints me that you, her eldest daughter, seem to have bought fully into the notion that a Romney GOP nomination is a fait a compli (Sorry if I misspelled that French term!!! LOL)!!
It tells me, concomitantly, that you also accept that your mother will NOT be the nominee, whether through a brokered convention or a draft at the convention!!
Do you know something we don’t??
Has Sarah TOTALLY omitted herself from ANY consideration to be the nominee??
She’s going there!! To Tampa!! She’s rented a space there!!
    Why??
If you read C4P, as your Uncle Chuck does, then you know there are MANY people there who have VOWED to NEVER vote for Romney, no matter what, and have also declared their undying support for a Palin Presidency…….in 2012!!!
So while this post DOES speak the TRUTH, it hurts to hear you NOT say the words we all want and pray to hear…..
    “I’m in!!!!”
    “Mr President, Game ON!!!”

  • Jan Page

Excellent, Bristol! Just like someone above posted I hope your article goes viral. I love how you questioned about why the pundits cannot or do not research before they write. Keep it up!
