On Second Thought, Episode 14 “Raider and a Ring”

Trust me, it’s crazy to see your life on television. That’s why every week, I’m going to do a blog posts called “On Second Thought.” These posts are where I will go over the episodes of my Lifetime show as I process the issues presented now that I’ve seen them aired.  I hope you’ll join me for these weekly posts – which will undoubtedly be part-confession, part-explanation, and part-celebration of my life right now!

Episode Fourteen, Air Date: July 31, 2012

I’m thankful Gino takes Tripp fishing, because nature is a big part of every Alaskan’s life!

Have you ever seen a cuter dog?  I bought Gino that sweet Newfoundland, because hoped it would give him a tiny taste of what it’s like to have a baby! After all, if we did get married and have kids, it would be hard work.

It turned out to be a great gift, because Gino loved him!  Of course, we immediately disagreed on a name.  That’s when I brought the question to you guys! (At the end of the episode, we reveal what you already know – we settled on Riot. At least for a bit.  Would you believe Gino changed his name back to Raider!?)

So how many of you have gone bear baiting?  This is a legal way to hunt bears in Alaska.  You set up a station with old food – whatever you have around the house works – and it brings the bears to you.  This time, of course, it brought Gino and me together!  When Gino gave me that promise ring, I was really excited.  Not that you could tell. It’s important to be quiet when you’re hunting, so it cracked me up that the entire exchange was in hushed tones.  Gino said the ring was symbol that he’d be “faithful and loyal and loving” and that we might one day get married.

Stay tuned to see if that actually happens.  I’ll be happy to find out if that happens as well.  However, the promise ring created one of the best lines of the season:

“I love you.  Okay, now let’s shoot a bear.”

Thanks for coming along with me during this adventure of “Life’s a Tripp.”  It was a wonderful way to let all of you into my life in a fun way.

    Bristol,
Glad things have gotten better with Gino. “Kicked to the Curb” really had me worried. I think there are things you both need to work out and they all revolve around expectations. I know you mentioned the house cleaning in the prior episode and blog post, but I’ll talk about it here, since it’s all about the same core issue. Both of you are working. House cleaning/work, therefore, must be a team effort – just like it is with your parents – follow their model. They’ve got it right.

Perhaps there’s tasks you like and he hates, and vice versa – you can complement each other that way. My wife, Elsy hates carrying, loading washers and dryers. I hate folding. But, folding does not bother her. So, I carry, load, and wash; she folds. We both cook – sometimes her – sometimes me. Whatever it is, the bottom line is neither one of you should expect the other to be a maid.

Totally unrelated – your concerns about recoil. Go to http://www.chuckhawks.com/ He has excellent recoil energy charts up that you can reference so you know what you’re getting into before you pick that gun up. Generally once the gun exerts more than 20 lbs of force on you, it’s going to start getting uncomfortable. .308s, .30-06s are in the 20-lb range. You’ve fired 12-ga shotguns, and they go from 45 – to 70 lbs (3.5″ shells are up to 70 lbs and will leave your shoulder black and blue for a week – if you don’t have a good pad on the buttstock. Been there. Done it), so if you can handle them, you can handle these rifles no problem.
Back to Gino…just be sure you resolve your expectations of one another before converting that promise ring to a wedding ring.

“I love you. Okay, now let’s shoot a bear.” Awesome line, Bristol! Hahaha You also had the best line in Sarah Palin’s Alaska. (“Prom hair”) I don’t think you get enough credit for how truly funny you are. I loved when you and Gino bumped fists. That’s exactly why I love your relationship so much. You’re best friends as well as boyfriend and girlfriend. You’re super cute together! Listen to your heart, Bristol.

Am really enjoying “Life’s a Tripp”! I look forward to each episode to see what’s going on in your life. God bless!

I think it’s wonderful that you have a good head on your shoulders! You’re not jumping into marriage BUT you want to establish a strong lasting relationship bc of your son. Keep up the good work!

Loved the show, hate to see it end but I know it had to. You’re a great inspiration for my daughters. The ONLY reality show that Ive allowed them to watch since it was wholesome. Not Jersey Shore or selling yourself to 100 guys vying for you in order to find marriage “material”! I loved that you weren’t afraid to stand by your convictions and voice them. I also like that the show wasn’t about your mom. I love your mom but it was refreshing to see you separate from her, in your own light! :)
Congrats to you and Gino and OMG welcome back to DWTS! Team Palin in this house!!! :)
May life bring you and your family many more blessings! Stay Strong & Positive!

Oh and PS.. Good call on your mom’s suggestion on Jeremiah for your quote for your bibles in the gift baskets. I think it was the show before this one. One of my favorite quotes Jeremiah 29:13. I use it quite often! :) high5 to your mom! It made my heart skip a beat when she uttered Jeremiah. :)

Listen to your BRAIN first, before any other body organ (heart, etc.) Gino may be sweet & cute, but there is no rush. A ring is nice, but no rush. Can you tell us about him a little? How did you meet? Where is he from? What does he do?

  • David Dempsey

Bristol, good photo and post. I hope your relationship with Gino goes well.

Jellybean, you are an a**h**e, and you and people like you are the ones who “stink to high heaven”.

      Good post, David!
