Not Really Funny

Have you ever noticed how comedians always poke fun at conservatives, and then throw their hands up in the air when we’re offended?

It’s just a joke, they say.  Get a sense of humor, they say.

Well, here’s the thing.  John Fund makes a great point in National Review today that shows why we aren’t laughing:

It’s been obvious ever since Barack Obama appeared on the political scene that comedians rarely go beyond lame jokes about him. As far back as 2009, the Los Angeles Times noted that “TV’s leading political humorists have largely backed away from their ritual comic hazing of the president.”

During last year’s presidential election, a study from George Mason University’s Center for Media and Public Affairs reported that comics made more than twice as many jokes about GOP candidate Mitt Romney than they did about Obama. From late August of 2012 until early October, network late-night comics Jimmy Fallon, Jay Leno, David Letterman, and Craig Ferguson dumped on Obama only 62 times compared to 148 times for Romney.

In other words, the comedians don’t poke fun at the President because they try to protect him.  Or maybe, with all this going on, they honestly can’t find humor in him anymore anyway.

Either way, it’s not really funny.

Right on Bristol…what is going on in not funny!

Letterman is a Joke. The only time I watch his Show is when he has a Guest that I want to see, and I only watch that portion of the Show with the Guest … then I change Channels … back to Jay Leno or another Show.

May be it is proof that they knew the targeting of the IRS all along and just did not wanted to get audited as well.

  • Britney

I don’t see what the big deal is. Of course liberal comedians are going to make fun of conservatives more, and of course conservative comedians are going to make fun of liberals more.

  • GarColga

What’s funny is that Bristol wants us to believe she wrote this post and is a “conservative” who reads the National Review! I seriously doubt that Bristol has much of a clue of what’s going on in the world today, certainly not enough to have an informed opinion.

    • ishy

LOL! That is so true. Bristol “reading” the National Review…now that made me laugh.

      Projecting?

      • ishy

Hope you’re following Christ’s example today Mel!

          Yep, speaking the truth!

          • ishy

With threats? Not very Christian of you Mel. Please don’t be a hypocrite.

          • $51252694

What threats? Threatening to tell the truth? The truth always makes liberals cry, you have been here long enough, you have seen it. In fact, it seems to me you are still crying.

Btw, your anti-Christian bigotry is showing.

          • ishy

Scroll down. You wrote to RushPig:

“You are going to cry when I am done with you. Your luck that I don’t have time today.”

Yes that sounds just like something the Lord would say.

      • GarColga

Haha right. Look we’ve been exposed to Bristol since 2008, through DWTS, and a couple failed reality shows. She is uneducated, monosyllabic, and bless her heart she just doesn’t seem very bright or interesting. Her blog posts clearly are not written by her, it’s entirely possible she doesn’t even read her own blog as the writing would be beyond her comprehension.

        • $51252694

          Still projecting?

          • GarColga

Do you even know what “projecting” is?

            Oops, you did it again!

        • otlset

“Her blog posts clearly are not written by her…”

Got any proof Fry? I think Leela writes your posts.

          • GarColga

The proof is in the pudding!

  • mercysaidno

I have. And have you noticed that the only group it is okay to slam is Christians? But, take heart, Jesus told us to expect it. He was hated without a cause and so shall we be. I consider myself to be in good company. John 3:19 says, “And this is the judgment, that light has come into the world and yet men have loved darkness more than light, because their works were evil.” Little Bristol, make sure you are in God’s will and you will be fine always.

    • ishy

Actually historians have recently discovered that Christian “persecution” was mostly made up by the Catholic Church in order to gain sympathy and membership back in the day :) Guess old habits are hard to break.

      • otlset

Meanwhile Christians in Egypt and other areas of the Muslim mideast are being harrassed, driven out of their homes and communities and even killed as I write.

        • ishy

What does that have to do with bashing David Letterman! Stay on topic!!!!

          • otlset

Just responding to your already off-topic and ignorant response to mercysaidno’s view of which group is often the target of the late-night comedians, including and of course featuring Letterman.

          • ishy

Speaking of ignorant….like most conservatives Mercy has a big chip on her shoulder. How silly of her to think that late night comedians go after Christians because that’s the only group its ok to “slam”. Geez how about 1…just 1 example of a late night comedian slamming Christianity? Maybe I should download all the monologues from last nights talk shows…I bet they made fun of the IRS and government, celebrities, fads and many other silly news items. I bet the didn’t talk about Jesus or Churches or Christians at all.

Letterman is an embarrasement for all with any sense of morality, for he hasn’t any… !

  • 1MiddleRoader

My response to this post is: So what? Late-night comics tend to make more jokes about Conservatives. Talk radio leans way to the right. “Hollywood elites” tend to be left-wing; country singers tend to be right-wing. Welcome to America!
Comedians’ jokes reflect, at least to some degree, their political bias. But Bristol takes the study to mean that they don’t use Obama jokes in order to protect him. Really??? Do you really think David Letterman sits around at meetings and says, “Oh, that’s a hilarious joke about Obama! But I’m not gonna use it. Gotta protect the Prez.” Late-night TV is way too cutthroat to discard good jokes.

I was also surprised that Bristol, given her personal (and understandable)
animosity toward Letterman, did not mention that he is the “prime offender”. When you take him out of the equation, the margin of bias narrows considerably. I also think one can read too much into these joke studies. For example, the
same organization listed Anthony Weiner as the 2nd most frequent
target (after Obama) in 2011. I don’t think that is partisan bias; it’s just that those jokes almost write themselves (although, in my opinion, they get old fast.)

Interestingly, the same organization conducted a 6-month study in 2010 (which included Letterman) in which it found that Obama was “by far” the most frequent joke target (Sarah Palin was 2nd.) http://www.cmpa.com/pdf/media_monitor_q4_2010.pdf
Personally, I don’t find that surprising- the current president is in the news a lot and lends himself to topical humor. The subsequent study that Bristol cites was when Romney was somewhat of a newcomer to the news scene – to comics, he was “fresh blood”.
Pointing out left-wing bias in late-night comedy is all fine and good. But I repeat, so what? If you don’t like those shows, grow a thicker skin, or change the station. Same goes for talk radio. Some on the left want the “Fairness Doctrine,” which was eliminated over 20 yrs ago, to be reinstated. I don’t. While I might wish there were more political diversity on the radio, (just as Bristol wishes there were more jokes against liberals on late-night TV), I don’t think it should be legislated. That’s what ratings are for.

    • $51252694

“political diversity on the radio” It was tried – people just could not stomach the leftist hate and lies – so they went out of business. That is why they want to force it down the people’s throat with the wrongly-named “Fairness Doctrine”.

    • $51252694

They do not ridicule (that is what they do to conservatives) the president and Islamists – because they fear retaliation – the aforementioned 2 are very thin-skinned. Leftist will demand they be fired (they are behind Leno leaving), O-thin-skin will put the IRS on them and Islamists will go on a killing spree.

So the cowards and bullies go for the good-natured and peaceful conservatives and Christians, also because it is PC to do so.

They also do not want to be called racists.

      • 1MiddleRoader

Regarding Leno, I’m not that interested in, or knowledgeable about, late-night TV battles, but I personally haven’t come across any evidence that leftists are behind it. I suspect the major “bias” in the decision is against the older demographic (which I am part of). However, not particularly proud of this, but this older person has been known to watch Disney Channel!!! (BTW, Disney’s “Good Luck Charlie” is kind of a cute family show and I think Conservatives would like it.)

        • $51252694

Even if you came across such evidence you would probably still deny it, judging from how you are covering for corrupt Obama and Hilary.

In 2009 when Leno had Sarah on, liberals were furious and vowed to get rid of him one way or the other. Come on, you read Huffingtonpost, you know exactly what I am talking about. On top of it, he made one Obama joke too many.

      • PJ

Sarah quit because of complaints against her and constantly plays the victim of the media. Prime example of a thin-skinned conservative, or is this a conspiracy of retaliation on the conservative side?

        • otlset

None of this is true of course. Sarah actually is a victim of much of the media, reflected in false hit-and-run BS memes by those like PJ above, who apparently gobble up the garbage that comes down the lamestream media chute for consumption by gullible fools like him/her. I hope you wake up soon PJ and stop mindlessly eating media crap, for your own good as well as ultimately the country’s.

          • ishy

OMG are you that douchebag Orson Scott Card?

          • otlset

            Never heard of him.

          • ishy

            LOL

          • PJ

Not true that she quit? Not true she said she quit because of lawsuits against her? What media do you consume?

          • otlset

She didn’t quit because of merely ‘complaints’ against her, she quit because of the mounting number of completely bogus lawsuits against her which 1) was draining her modest (at the time) financial capabilities to the point that she knew bankruptcy lay ahead if she didn’t take steps to pay down the legal costs, and 2) these mounting BS lawsuits were diverting her time and energy away from her duties as governor to the detriment of the state. So she resigned for the benefit of her state (leaving the governorship in the hands of like-minded Parnell — who when he took office *no more of those bogus lawsuits were even filed* — surprise surprise — which clearly showed that the phony lawsuits were only intended to impede her work and reputation. In other words she was *specifically targeted* by the scum you ally yourself with in your PDS mental disease) as well as her family’s benefit to avoid bankruptcy.

What media do you consume? Probably just the Comedy channel like all the other misinformed dufusses who think they know it all.

        • Shannon

Actually, Sarah Palin quit because of incessant bogus accusations of ethics violations that forced her to waste tax-payer money continually defending herself. She quit because she considered not wasting her constituents’ money and protecting her family against vicious media attacks more important than her immediate political career.
