Sixteen-year-old Chauncy Jones’s life has changed forever thanks to the simple act of one kind man in a Memphis grocery store.

Matt White was approached by Chauncy a few weeks ago while shopping for produce late at night. Chancy had ridden the 9 P.M. bus all the way to what he called the “rich people’s Kroger” and asked Matt if he could carry his groceries to the car and be “paid” with a box of donuts.

Chauncy told Matt that he and his mother had nothing to eat and he was hoping someone would buy them some food. Matt was more than happy to buy him whatever he needed and said he took the young boy on a “shopping spree,” buying cereal, pizzas, chips, milk, tooth brushes, and whatever else was needed. Matt then drove Chauncy to his home and met his mother. Matt wrote about it on Facebook:

He wasn’t kidding. He and his mom had nothing. They didn’t even have beds or furniture. They were sleeping on pads made out of sleeping bags, they had two lamps and nothing in their fridge. Nothing. His mother was so sweet but very fragile. I couldn’t tell what it was, but she had some sort of physical and/ or mental disability that made her shake and made walking difficult. I thought I was going to cry. As we unpacked the food into their kitchen, you could see the hope coming back into Chauncy’s eyes. He knew he wasn’t going to be hungry. He looked like a kid again.

But what happened next takes the story to a whole other level.

After Matt shared his story on Facebook and it began going viral, he decided to set up a GoFundMe page called “Chauncy’s Chance.” The only goal was to raise $250 to buy a lawnmower so that the teenager could start earning money for himself. Other items like clothing and furniture were also asked for. Matt even offered to come pick up donations himself!

Then something happened after four days that no one ever dreamed could: So much money was pouring in, Chauncy and his mother learned that they have more than enough money for a lawnmower and in fact have enough to buy a house! Over $300,000 has been raised so far and Matt has had to continue raising the amount!

Matt writes about his life after meeting this family:

The impact that those people had on my life can never be measured. I am so grateful for the lives we share with one another, so grateful for each and every one of God’s children.

“Our God is an awesome God, and we can never be thankful enough for the blessings we have,” Matt said.
