One hundred children receiving their first communion is being deemed a historic moment because it happened in an Iraqi town that is constantly under threat from ISIS.

Over 700 people attended the Mass in Alqosh, according to aleteia.org, including nuns and all the priests of the city. It is stated that the Chaldean primate presided over the ceremony, marking the first time “the patriarch celebrated communions in the community.”

The young boys and girls were encouraged by the priests to stay in the city and help in its reconstruction and to preserve a Christian heritage. The primate told them to “be stronger, come to church and participate in the life of the Christian community as one participates in the life of a family.”

The vicar of Baghdad said:

“Life in the area is almost back to normal. We hope that soon the whole plain [of Nineveh] can be liberated from the jihadists, and that refugees can return to their villages.”

And the kids seem eager to help. A young boy expressed his desire to be a priest so he can serve the poor when he gets older. Those gathered were moved by the emotion of his commitment.

I’m moved, too. Let’s pray for this community and ask that God continues to strengthen their faith and that these children follow Him all the days of their lives. This gives me so much hope for the future in the Middle East.
