Ernest Thompson didn’t expect the Navy to show up in his front yard, but that’s just what happened outside of his home in Gardena, California. And his heart-warming reaction was caught on video.

The 98-year-old World War II veteran came out to his porch to see a group of 24 Navy chief selects march into place on his street and stop in front of his house to sing “Anchors Aweigh.” As he heard the familiar tune, Thompson stood, with the help of his walker and a tear in his eye, and gave the men and women a proper salute.

Then, the soldiers lined up in the man’s driveway and individually walked up to greet him and thank him for his service all those years ago. Thompson, who served on the USS Missouri, said he was “having one of the best days of his life.”
