The reason a 9-year-old prodigy wants to become an astrophysicist will amaze you

He should be in fourth grade, but 9-year-old William Maillis has already graduated high school and has started his first year in college and I love the reason why he wants to become an astrophysicist.

William wants to prove God’s existence.

According to Yahoo! News, he’s already started on several theories on how the Earth was created. For now, William is enrolled in a community college in Pennsylvania but hopes to enroll at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh next fall.

The boy’s father is a Greek Orthodox priest, and his faith is why he wants to become an astrophysicist to improve upon the ideas of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. In this young man’s mind, there’s no way our intricate universe came from nothing:

“I want to prove to everybody that God does exist.”

“I just want him to appreciate the gift he has, which I think he does,” William’s father said. “I tell him, ‘God gave you a gift. The worst thing would be to reject that gift and not use it for the betterment of the world.’ ”

I love that William is taking his faith to the field of science. We need more like him. Yes, it’s great that he could do trigonometry by the time he was 7 or that he can now sit in a college class and not have to take notes like everybody else because he just soaks it up by listening, but his real purpose is to prove his faith in God, and that’s most impressive of all.
