Trust me, it’s crazy to see your life on television. That’s why every week, I’m going to do a blog posts called “On Second Thought.” These posts are where I will go over the episodes of my Lifetime show as I process the issues presented now that I’ve seen them aired. I hope you’ll join me for these weekly posts – which will undoubtedly be part-confession, part-explanation, and part-celebration of my life right now!
Episode Five, Air Date: July 3, 2012
Washington, DC is not my type of place. I don’t love being up to my neck in politics, and it’s hard not to be in the nation’s capital. However, it was worth flying down to do a book signing and to see Mom speak. [Read more...]
As everyone is trying to figure out what the Supreme Court ruling means, I agree with Rush Limbaugh who said yesterday on his radio show: the only thing we can do now is start winning elections. [Read more...]
Many times, people try to define me by my parents. I am Republican Sarah Palin’s daughter. Or, here in Alaska, I am Iron Dog champion Todd Palin’s kid. This is true – and I’m so proud of my family and my parents! But, there’s something even better.
What am I talking about?
Well, after I wrote about “How I Got Over My Very Public Mistakes,” the guys at CCEF sent me a nice little bundle of materials. I’m just now reading one little booklet, called “Single Parent: Daily Grace for the Hardest Job” which has this description:
If you are a single parent, you already know you have one of the hardest jobs in the world. Trying to be both dad and mom–breadwinner, cook, chauffeur, comforter, dishwasher, homework helper, disciplinarian, nurse, and role mode–can wear down the hardiest man or woman. But do you know that God, in the Bible, offers words of grace, power, and hope especially for you?
Well, that got my attention! In the first chapter, Robert D. Jones writes that we should mainly view ourselves as Christians, not as “single parents.”
While our marital or parental positions describe our circumstances, they do not give us our identity. Whether you are single, a parent, or that challenging hybrid of a single parent, that is not who you ARE. Who are you? Hear the apostle’s words to all who belong to Christ Jesus.
He then quotes this:
“You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourself with Christ.” (Galatians 3)
Many times, people try to define me by my parents and my family, which is wonderful. I’m so proud of all of them! But my true spiritual identity is even better than proudly wearing the last name of “Palin.” How much better is it that I’m a child of God?
In other words, I’m not so much a “Christian SINGLE PARENT,” I am a CHRISTIAN who for the time being is a single parent. Being a single mom is my situation, not my identity.
Are you a struggling single parent or do you know one? Leave a comment below before Monday at noon and I’ll randomly select one of you to receive this great little mini-book!
THIS HAS NOW OFFICIALLY CLOSED! WE’LL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SOON ON THE BLOG AND PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR MORE FUN GIVEAWAYS!

Most of you know I’d rather post photos of my family and write about Alaska than talk about politics. But after reading and watching some recent commentary, I can’t help myself.
The chattering class is talking – endlessly – about Mitt Romney’s choice of a Vice Presidential running mate. Will he choose a Governor? A Senator? A Congressman? There are many good options for Governor Romney – and all of them have already been dissected in the media – with a list of pros and cons beside their names. One is too “northern,” another is too “boring,” another is too “white.” I’ve lived through the scrutiny the family will endure, and it can be a nightmare.
I don’t pretend to know the best pick for Governor Romney. But there’s one theme that keeps coming up, and it’s ridiculous: that Governor Romney should avoid Senator McCain’s mistake in his Vice Presidential running mate decision.
Chris Cillizza brought it up here:
If you buy that basic way of thinking about the race, it makes it more likely that Romney’s main criteria in picking a running mate will be to do no harm, to avoid the public relations debacle that Senator John McCain (Ariz.) courted when he named former Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential pick in 2008.
Later, he describes the GOP as a “party still trying to get out from under the Palin pick.”
Talking Points Memo in an article titled, “Why Mitt Romney Won’t Take GOP Down Another VP Rabbit Hole” quoted a strategist who said my mom is “a case study on what not to do. The McCain campaign really screwed up by going in and picking someone who was just gonna shake up the ticket when they should have picked someone who’s safe.”
In other words, the pundits say Senator McCain made a huge mistake. But where’s the evidence to back up this conventional wisdom? I’m not a pundit, but I remember the race. I was there. I remember the frenzied crowds after my mom joined the ticket. I remember the huge fundraising surge. I remember her convention speech. I even remember how McCain/Palin took a polling lead over Obama/Biden.
Then the economy melted down. You could feel people’s fear. You could see it in their eyes on the trail. McCain suspended his campaign to rush back to Washington to deal with the crisis. A lot of people criticized him, but he did what he thought was right. And guess what, the economy was melting down while Republicans were in charge.
Take a good look at this list of polls. Shortly after Senator McCain picked my mom, the polls turned favorable. But he lost the lead for good the week he suspended his campaign, and we never got it back. Not in a single poll.
But even then, my Mom helped. A lot. She raised millions of dollars that helped us fight hard until the last moment. And Senator McCain actually performed better among those for whom the “Palin Pick” was very important to their vote. Immediate post-election polling shows a large majority of Republicans thought my mom helped Senator McCain and more than 90% had a favorable or very favorable view of her.
(By the way, pundits, do you guys do much research before slamming my mom? It didn’t take me long at all to find the facts that refute your so-called “conventional wisdom.”)

OCTOBER 22, 2008: Mom greets supporters during a campaign rally at the Green High School Memorial Stadium in Ohio, with less than two weeks left before the election.
I don’t write this post to criticize Senator McCain – far from it. He and my mom had an uphill battle against Obama who promised to stop the oceans’ rise and heal the planet. I honestly don’t think any Republican candidate could’ve beaten Obama in 2008. It was the Democrats’ moment.
But 2012 is a Republican moment. Whomever Governor Romney picks will be better qualified to run the country than our current President. And this time around, we’re not running against the hard-to-pin-down “hope and change,” we’re running against a President who can’t stop rising gas prices, much less rising oceans.
Please.
Mom answered the call to serve her country, energized the base, and inspired millions. Plus, she did it with good humor and grace. I don’t know what else she could’ve reasonably be expected to do.
The economy was collapsing, and the Democrats had nominated “The One.” My mom worked wonders, and it was such a joy watching her connect with Americans from coast to coast. But she could not work miracles.
It’s been four years now since Senator McCain selected my mom, and he made the right choice. Who will Governor Romney select as his running mate? Well, we’ve still got several months before we find out.
Whoever it turns out to be, I don’t envy the next vice-presidential nominee.
After all… Sarah Palin is a tough act to follow.

So, after my last post, I got a lot of comments from people saying they were sorry they weren’t at CPAC to hear Mom’s speech. Well, those of us who were there know there’s nothing like being in the audience when she’s on a roll. But, I did find this video of the speech in its entirety for your weekend enjoyment.
In the comments section, tell me your favorite part — when the crowd shouted down the Occupy Wall Street guys? The Washington-DC-as-a-hot-tub line?
You gotta hand it to my Mom — she nailed this speech. (And you can’t tell it from this video, but she was delivering it in some very cool shoes!)
UPDATE: You asked, I deliver! Here’s a photo of the shoes she was wearing!

When I was posting below about my co-author Nancy and her adopted kid, it made me scroll through my iPhone photos from CPAC. Did you hear about my mom’s awesome speech? I lost count of how many standing ovations she got. Here’s a photo of my mom as she was leaving the stage, signing an autograph – Willow and I were standing behind her – and I thought it would be funny to take a photo of Nancy’s two oldest kids who were watching from the VIP Lounge. (See the two of them up at the top in the middle section, standing together?) Nancy was texting me photos of me and Willow as we watched Mom speak! Also, it looks like there’s a Secret Service agent escorting Mom from the podium – but don’t worry.
I don’t think it was that Secret Service agent!

How did you celebrate Earth Day?
What? You didn’t realize yesterday was Earth Day?
Well, if you forgot to “save the planet” by buying inferior-yet-more-expensive recycled products or by planting a tree, you might as well head over to National Review to read my mom’s thoughts on the holiday:
On this holiest of days for EcoLiberals, how about if Americans celebrate Earth Day with responsible energy development that leads to greater independence and conservation?
There’s no better way for President Obama and his administration to celebrate Earth Day than to embrace a real, environmentally sound commitment to energy independence instead of relying on foreign countries that lack environmental safeguards. One aspect of the “all-of-the-above” approach I have been discussing for years involves, of course, the necessity to “drill, baby, drill.”
It’s no secret that throughout America, including the very wealthy state of Alaska, we find a storehouse of natural resources that God so benevolently dumped underfoot, just waiting to be tapped. ANWR, for example, is screaming to be used to help bring prosperity and national security to America. Indeed, there is an inherent link between energy and prosperity and energy and security. On this day, as many are focused on preserving the planet, environmentalists need not fear that the land or wildlife would suffer from the wise decision to drill here. As Alaskans know, ANWR is not some luxurious vacation spot teeming with Bambi and friends frolicking through waterfalls and flower-strewn mountainsides, as environmentalist fundraising advertisements depict it. It is a vast, remote, desolate, frozen area available to be used with a tiny drilling footprint to bring the country closer to what is clearly needed: commonsense, money-saving, job-producing energy independence. Believe me, I live in the Last Frontier because I cherish the earth and thrive in the clean air and fresh water amid our plentiful wildlife. I don’t want to mess this up for future generations.
Read the rest here. And, don’t feel bad if you didn’t do anything to celebrate… The earth will survive. But I agree with Mom — let’s start thinking more responsibly about the topic!

Americans experience “sticker shock” every time they go to the gas station to fill up their vehicle. I certainly do. I drive a truck in Alaska. Here, you have to drive something big and safe to meet the challenges of icy roads, moose collisions, hauling family members, and carrying equipment. (Before you even start writing your snarky comments, don’t tell me to trade my truck in for a goofy little Volt – I doubt a Volt would even have enough oomph to warm the car up here!)
Anyone else feeling the pain at the pump?
Well, tune in to Fox News on Friday night for an energy special co-hosted by my mom. Unlike President Obama, she’s willing to talk about solutions to the problems we all face with rising energy prices. Her special is called ‘Paying at the Pump’ and you’ll hear answers to the nation’s rising gas price problems! And keep in mind that rising oil prices don’t just effect gasoline prices, but every petroleum product that touches our everyday lives – like plastics, fertilizers, jet fuel, and just about everything else surrounding you.
So tune in on Friday to find out some solutions. President Obama, if you aren’t doing anything, you might want to watch!

The best thing about the holidays is getting together with family. But when my family gets together, it’s a real crowd. Here we are on Easter.
One things for sure — we didn’t have to worry about the chocolate in the eggs melting. Can you spot me? Mom? Dad? Click on the photo to enlarge!

Hello, new blog friends! I just wanted to congratulate my mother for doing a great job this morning hosting Today! I laughed when she poked fun at herself by pretending to read all of those newspapers, a reference to that Katie Couric interview back in 2008. I thought she did well discussing topics of the day, interviewing people, and generally just having fun with the regular crew. I bet Today experienced a pretty big bump in the ratings due to all of the loyal Palin fans who always show support and encouragement! I saw a comment that said to forget “Game Change” — Today should call this episode “Ratings Change!”
My mom definitely proves you can be in the lamestream media without being of the lamestream media.
Way to hold your own, Mom!
But can you really imagine Tori Spelling having a moose-kebob potluck? Me either!

People have always said told me that my mom would be a great television host. That’s why I’m excited that she’ll be guest-hosting “Today” this Tuesday morning!
She told Breitbart News:
“I see this as a good opportunity to bring an independent, common-sense conservative perspective to NBC. We’re ‘going rogue’ and infiltrating some turf for a day.”
Also, Katie Couric happens to be filling in for Robin Roberts next week on “Good Morning America.” When Breitbart News asked her about this match-up, Mom was her usual self.
She said, “Game on.”
In other words, make sure you tune in. She’ll be a totally unique presence, won’t she? (Just try to think of anyone else like her on television!)
I, for one, cannot wait to watch. I know she’s going to be awesome!
Have a great weekend, everyone!! Leave a comment below to receive weekly updates, including the best of this blog. You may also enjoy:
Dear President Obama,
You don’t know my telephone number, but I hope your staff is busy trying to find it. Ever since you called Sandra Fluke after Rush Limbaugh called her a slut, I figured I might be next. You explained to reporters you called her because you were thinking of your two daughters, Malia and Sasha. After all, you didn’t want them to think it was okay for men to treat them that way:
“One of the things I want them to do as they get older is engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on,” you said. “I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way. And I don’t want them attacked or called horrible names because they’re being good citizens.”
And I totally agree your kids should be able to speak their minds and engage the culture. I look forward to seeing what good things Malia and Sasha end up doing with their lives.
But here’s why I’m a little surprised my phone hasn’t rung. Your $1,000,000 donor Bill Maher has said reprehensible things about my family. He’s made fun of my brother because of his Down’s Syndrome. He’s said I was “f—-d so hard a baby fell out.” (In a classy move, he did this while his producers put up the cover of my book, which tells about the forgiveness and redemption I’ve found in God after my past – very public — mistakes.)
If Maher talked about Malia and Sasha that way, you’d return his dirty money and the Secret Service would probably have to restrain you. After all, I’ve always felt you understood my plight more than most because your mom was a teenager. That’s why you stood up for me when you were campaigning against Sen. McCain and my mom — you said vicious attacks on me should be off limits.
Yet I wonder if the Presidency has changed you. Now that you’re in office, it seems you’re only willing to defend certain women. You’re only willing to take a moral stand when you know your liberal supporters will stand behind you.
But…
What if you did something radical and wildly unpopular with your base and took a stand against the denigration of all women… even if they’re just single moms? Even if they’re Republicans?
I’m not expecting your SuperPAC to return the money. You’re going to need every dime to hang on to your presidency. I’m not even really expecting a call. But would it be too much to expect a little consistency? After all, you’re President of all Americans, not just the liberals.

UPDATE: I’ve gotten over 1,700 comments since I posted this! Please keep them coming and see my response to some of them here.
You may know me as a daughter of Sarah Palin or the pregnant teenager that created a political controversy during the last Presidential cycle. But a lot has happened since then.
Now, I’m mom trying to make a good life for a rambunctious little boy who loves to play hockey and ride on the snow machine. Over the past few years, I’ve made mistakes, I’ve learned some lessons, and I’m trying to be a good mom. After a few years of entering the public conversation in a very dramatic fashion, we’re doing well. We have a “fixer-upper” in Alaska which I’m remodeling, and we’re trying to forge a life for ourselves.
Yes, I may have a mom who’s quite famous and a dad who’s an Iron Dog champion, but I’m like many American moms. I worry about the best way to raise my child, am concerned about making sure he has the best care, and am trying to make it to my job on time without getting pulled over for speeding.
As you can tell, I’ve also decided to write a blog. Here I’d love to keep a record of the things that happen in my life and also to share them with my far-flung friends. Wasilla is my home, of course, but so many of you showed support to me as I struggled with a pregnancy I hadn’t planned, supported my mother when she ran for Vice President, voted for me when I was on Dancing with the Stars, and snatched up my book to make it a best seller. It’s been my privilege to get to know some of you – on the campaign trail, on my book tour, and even on Facebook. I hope you consider this blog a way for you to be a part of my life in Alaska without having to put on more layers, buy hand warmers, or wear boots!
Here on Lake Lucille, life is thankfully more ordinary than it has been the past few years. If you’d like to share in our lives by following my new blog, leave a comment below to automatically receive a weekly e-zine with my best entries! (Also, if you haven’t already, fan me on Facebook here!) I’m thinking of posting a photo of Tripp with a Mohawk, doing some very fun giveaways, and maybe even comment on the next season of Dancing with the Stars.
I hope you’ll join me!
