Billy Graham, is often sited as the standard by which all preachers should be judged. Anytime you speak with Christians about the foibles of the televangelists, they continually point to the untarnished Graham. Of course, this is not true.
For some reason, Billy Graham gets a pass for his controversies. As this YouTube video shows, he had an antisemitic conversation with President Nixon.
Yesterday, in a question and answer piece published in the Kansas City Star, Rev. Graham extends his bigotry to include atheists.
Here’s the Question:
DEAR BILLY GRAHAM: Why does atheism seem to be growing so much in recent years? I guess there have always been people around who didn’t believe in God, but atheists seem to be in the public eye a lot more than they used to be. — M.M.
Here’s Graham’s answer (with my comments added):
DEAR M.M.: Yes, atheism has been in the public eye more in recent years, largely because of a few atheists who’ve captured the public’s attention through their books. They aren’t large in number, but they do tend to be aggressive in promoting their ideas.
Really? Aren’t you the king of “promoting your ideas,” Rev. Graham? When was the last time Dawkins, Harris, Dennett, or Hitchens filled up arenas threatening people with eternal damnation if they don’t come forward and denounce their belief?
And, Rev. Graham, haven’t your books been on the best seller lists for years? Don’t you “capture the public’s attention?”
Why have they drawn so much attention? One reason, I believe, is because they know how to use the media very effectively. They also appeal to people who want to be free from God or any moral restraints. Like the philosophers of Paul’s day who were constantly looking for new ideas to debate, many people today eagerly latch on to the latest fad (see Acts 17:21). Atheism attracts their attention, at least for a while.
Wow! Which atheist has ever received as much media attention as you Rev. Graham? You have several times bought prime-time television slots on major networks to promote your sermons. You have even had movies out of your messages. You are the one called America’s pastor, and you have attended every Presidential inauguration from Eisenhower to George W. Bush.
The freedom from “moral restraints” argument is disgusting and quite frankly should be beneath you. How many more theist child molesters, thieves and murders must be revealed before you stop making this nonsensical claim? Why are there just as many Christians who divorce as nonbelievers? Some of the most moral people I know are atheists, and they’re good for goodness sake.
In reality, however, modern atheists have very little new to say. In fact, atheism has been around for thousands of years; even the Psalmist, writing hundreds of years before Christ, referred to them: “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’ ” (Psalm 14:1).
Atheism’s message may not be new, but it is continually evolving. Isn’t Christianity nothing new? The text book itself hasn’t changed for “thousands of years.”
Thanks for for calling us fools. You are right that Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.” Matthew 5:22 says, “…and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.” I guess I’ll see you in Hell.
Don’t be misled by those who claim God doesn’t exist, because he does. And the ultimate reason we know it is because he came down from heaven and walked on this earth in the person of Jesus Christ. Christ was God in human flesh, and he proved it by rising from the dead.
Thanks for the evidence Rev. Graham. Atheism doesn’t claim there is no god(s). It claims there is no proof of god(s).
