Land’s End Warning: Order School Uniforms, Get Porn

Upon getting our mail on Saturday we found a pornographic magazine addressed to my name, followed by “A Land’s End Bonus”. Thanks be to God that our boys had not gotten the mail that day, as they usually do to help their pregnant mama. We were horrified that this could end up in our mailbox via ordering school uniforms from our sweet part time Christian school.

A call to Land’s End Customer service revealed that any customer placing an on line order of over $100 could be sent this as a “free bonus”. Land’s End was not overly apologetic and claimed that it wasn’t their fault, but said that they could unsubscribe us from this “free bonus”. When I asked about other families, I was told by Land’s End customer service that they would each have to call to be removed from the list (the phone number is: 800.963.4816).

I immediately emailed all of our class lists and notified all moms not to let their kids get the mail since most moms would have had to place an order of $100 from Land’s End for the school year. Several had already received the magazine.

I also notified the administration and board of the school, prompting a 3-campus wide email from the headmaster on a Sunday night warning all parents, PreK-12. Our school will also be considering switching uniform vendors.

Please pass this on to any families you know that may have ordered anything from Land’s End. We have also ordered our homeschool uniform shirts from Land’s End and know many homeschool families that turn to them for more modest swim apparel and longer skirts. However, the distribution of soft core porn to families that order through Land’s End is deplorable and unacceptable.

Pornography is an insidious evil in our culture and we need to protect the hearts, minds and eyes of our children. Please share!!!!!!

** Edited to add that I did NOT select to receive “Free Bonus Mag” on checkout and neither did several other moms who received mag. It was sent automatically and without consent. My first goal in publicizing this is to make sure these images stay out of the hands and minds of our children! **

  • Mr. Incredible

It’s getting some traction on twitter – https://twitter.com/LandsEnd/status/498674997851086848

  • MotherGinger

So, specifics… did you get the Victoria’s Secret catalog? I’m wondering what it was that someone like you (and me) would consider porn, but they obviously didn’t.

  • CatholicKitteh

Umm…is it the “Self Magazine” that comes free with a $100 order? That’s hardly “pornography.” I mean, it’s a terrible magazine for sure, which is probably why they give it away for free, but it’s beauty hacks and vegetarian recipes and women modeling athletic wear. The most objectionable item on their page is probably the article lauding the return of crop tops.

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

No, it was a smutty mag with a topless woman on the cover in a very provocative pose.

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

    No, not Self.

  • Kathleen Burke

    Title?

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

There are thousands other moms lighting up social media who also consider it porn.

  • Kathleen Burke

I’ve seen 3 people on twitter mention it and they all link to your article. Seriously, what was the magazine?

  • Kate Cousino

Why is no-one giving the name of the magazine? I’d like to know more so that if I decide not to buy anything from Land’s End I can be specific about why. I’d also like to pass this information along if it is something truly objectionable. However, if I can’t even give the name of the objectionable magazine, I can’t expect to be credible with either the company or to other parents.

  • Lana

It was worse than any Victoria’s Secret catalog. If you want to see for yourself, go to any retailer who sells GQ or order over $100 worth if school uniforms from Land’s End!

  • Kathleen Burke

So are you saying that it was GQ magazine?

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

The name is all over Lands’ End facebook page if you go there. It is Gentleman’s Quarterly. There is a topless woman on the cover pulling down a skimpy bikini bottom.

  • Lana

Yes. The cover has a lady posing nude in a provocative position with only a lei.

  • Kate Cousino

OK. The Land’s End website had “Self” listed as the bonus for spending over $100, which was confusing.

  • Lana

    GQ

  • mamaof3

yes. it was GQ magazine. The photo on the front was of a naked woman with only a Hawaiian lei covering her breasts.

  • Emily Zanotti Skyles

That’s bad marketing not just because they’re sending skimpy bikini photos to families. It’s bad marketing because I can’t imagine anyone shopping at Land’s End is thinking of subscribing to GQ. Their marketing department should get a serious talking to, and possibly an unpaid vacation.

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

There are many shocked families who ordered school uniforms getting pictures of topless women!

  • Emily Zanotti Skyles

There are many shocked *people.* I imagine not a lot of Land’s End customers are going to appreciate that marketing failure.

  • missmissy68

They must have changed their free gift … LOL!! because it says “Self Magazine” on their website now.

  • anotherTXmomofboys

Thanks for sharing the name of the magazine. It helps when letting people know about this. Truly shocking!!!! Thank you for letting us all know!

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

Yes, good point! My husband got the mail from the drivers seat and literally threw the magazine at me when he saw the cover. He was equally offended!

  • Emily Zanotti Skyles

I have a feeling that whoever fulfills the “bonus” marketing for Land’s End is having a tough day. :)

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

I hope so. When I talked with customer service they weren’t overly apologetic, but hopefully they have changed their tune in the last 24 hours with lots of backlash. Keep letting them hear we don’t want this in our homes!

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

I just want to make sure that kids don’t go get the mail!!

  • Lana

    There wasn’t even a bikini!!

  • Dawn

The VP of marketing has only been in the job for a few months now. His resume speaks for itself.

    May 2014

Lands’ End announced Thursday morning the company has hired Steven Rado as its new Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

He’ll lead oversight of Lands’ End strategic development, direction, and implementation of all marketing activities.

Rado most recently worked as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Customer Strategy for Office Depot, and prior to that served as Vice President of Marketing for Victoria’s Secret Direct.

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

That is very interesting. Thank you for sharing. I have been in direct contact with Lands’ End PR dept. and the president is drafting a letter, but I want them to send out an email to customers at risk for receiving this warning them not to let their kids get the mail ASAP. They have discontinued all GQ subscriptions that were started, but there are still magazines in the mail.

  • Dawn

They need to make a public apology. Soon.
And a real one. Not – I’m sorry you were disappointed.

  • Dawn

HOLY CRAP. That absolutely is porn!!! I’ve used this company for years. I’m just stunned by this. It’s such a family-friendly company in its products…did it just take leave of its senses in giving you GQ??

  • Dawn

Kate, look at the comment right above yours. It contains an image of the magazine they’re sending out. It’s GQ and an UNBELIEVABLE cover for it.

  • Dawn

Look at the comment a few posts above, showing the actual GQ magazine they WERE sending out. They may have changed it, but it’s definitely inappropriate, soft porn.

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

I did remove the pictures from this blog. They are not hard to find if you really feel you must see them. I am less worried about my credibility than not scandalizing readers here, though everyone who has received the mag or seen the pictures has immediately said it was worse than they thought.

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

I did take the picture down so that our readers or kids in the room are not exposed to it unless they choose to be. It is not hard to find online if you really feel the need to see it!

  • buildingcathedralstexasmommy

Also, the inside and the articles are worse!!

  • Jordan Johnson

I called the number listed & spoke with a very helpful associate at land’s end. She explained to me that there was a glitch in the system & some families did receive magazines without requesting them & that the glitch also sent out “Gentleman’s Quarterly” magazine which did have a photo of a nude woman on the cover. She was SO apologetic & thankful for my inquiry to find out what actually happened. It’s certainly unfortunate but I was glad to know that it was a mistake, not at all intentional & she was beyond apologetic to me (& it didn’t even happen to me) she actually even said they , “are so embarrassed” and that they responded immediately to fix the situation. I would expect that they will be releasing an official statement to counteract any further misunderstanding. Very unfortunate for all involved. Also, I find it interesting that currently, after this post & almost 3K shares on fb there is still a Land’s End add on the pathos.com homepage….food for thought….

  • Eileen D’A

So disappointed to hear this. I order from LE all the time. May I ask the title of the magazine? I’d like to voice my concern in writing to the company and mention specifics. Thank you for sharing this.

  • Austin Ruse

Texas Mommy, Could you get in touch with me. I am a regular contributor to Breitbart News and this is very interesting to me. My email address is austinruse@c-fam.org

That’s crazy, awful and ridiculous! I can’t believe it … we do order modest bathing sutis from Lands’ End … I am so glad you have raised awareness of this … so sad.

  • Kate Cousino

You absolutely misunderstand me, David. I wanted more information so I could make my own assessment. But having seen the GQ in question–and having some idea of the content of GQ–I absolutely agree that it trends towards soft porn. It propagates a frankly exploitative view of women, and contains plenty of explicit sexual writing. It’s the male version of Cosmo–which is also way too explicit to be left where a middle school kid might find it.

I do tend to think it’s better to be very coolly rational when complaining about this sort of thing rather than emotional, but that’s mostly because its important to be taken seriously.

I consider myself a Catholic feminist, I’m not a “Traditionalist” in the sense I suspect you mean it, and I wish men like you cared enough about women and children as real people to understand the damage these (as you point out, almost omnipresent) representations of women do to children, women, and men.

  • Maureen

This is a shame. Years ago Lands End had Bible verses in their inside cover, and were closed on Sundays. They’ve gone in a new direction, I guess.
