A Hilarious Introduction to Metaphysics (& An Announcement for Chicago Readers)

Sevren Darden was a founder of the legendary Second City, Chicago’s improvisational comedy group that has gone on to launch the careers of many comedic legends. In this rare audio, he gives a hilarious 16 minute introduction to metaphysics. By the way… SPEAKING of Chicago, I’m going to be there again, August 16-17. I will [Read More...]

Dear Fellow Atheists, STOP Saying Christians Believe God is a Bearded Man in the Sky. They Don’t.

Not what any Christians think God is. Christians know full well God is not an old human being with a beard. God couldn't be that because God is not "a" being at all. God is the Ground of all Being. God is Being Itself. It is silly anthropomorphism to think of God as a human being.

So, I’m an atheist blogger and a professional philosopher. So this puts me in the unenviable position of having to deal with ignorant atheists who not only disparage philosophy but disparage sophisticated theology without understanding it. And honestly it makes me wince sometimes. I believe we can do better. We can make better arguments that [Read More...]

“God’s Not Dead” Fans, I Dare You To Study The Existence of God With Me, a Real Atheist Philosophy Professor.

I spent 11 years teaching philosophy at universities and I am an outspoken atheist blogger. So, I took special interest in the mean-spirited mischaracterization of people like me in the evangelical Christian movie God’s Not Dead, in which an atheist philosophy professor (the fictional Professor Radisson) is cast as a bullying villain. Stephen Law Debates William Lane Craig

Stephen Law, who puts special emphasis on “evil god” arguments, debated William Lane Craig in Westminster Central Hall in London on October 17. I haven’t had a chance to watch this yet but figured since it features Craig debating an actual philosopher, I would pass it on for you. If there are interesting moments we [Read More...]

On Friday I am finally going to put up an extensive post dissecting the philosophical arguments that atheist blogger Leah Libresco has either made or referred to in defending and explaining her decision to convert to Catholicism. But first this post will make some more important preliminary points about the inadequacy of the reasons for [Read More...]

Why I Bother Writing About the Boring Question of Whether Religious Beliefs Are True

Alain de Botton has caused a stir in the atheist blogosphere, and particularly here at Freethought Blogs, with his new book Religion for Atheists: A Non-believer’s Guide to the Uses of Religion. More specifically he caused waves with his article on CNN , which is heavy on selections from the book, and which begins as [Read More...]
