After Orlando: An Open Letter To Conservative Christians About Loving Gay People

Conservative Christians, if you loved gay, bisexual, lesbian, and transgender people you wouldn’t erase or minimize the fact that Orlando was a persecutory act against them. You also wouldn’t love them only for their potential to become conservative Christians like you. Your typical attitudes show you not only don’t love gays, but you don’t even give them the basic civic respect that you give others you think are at least as equally displeasing God. And you certainly don’t treat them as you would tolerate being treated for one solitary second. [Read more…]

So you say you just want to show me God’s love

This is a guest post by Lex When I was a Christian teenager, I enjoyed Jaci Velasquez’s music. I bought every album as it came out (and I still put her Christmas album on every December). One song in particular resonated strongly with me, Show you Love. (lyrics available at the bottom of the post) [Read More…]

Why a secular safe space is still important to me.

The following was written by guest contributor Amber Adamson. I struggle a lot when it comes to my feelings about friends and loved ones who belong to Abrahamic faiths. When in public, I often downplay this. Most of the time, it’s not an issue. They’re progressive politically, and we can just work around the subject of [Read More…]

Before I Deconverted: Christmas Became A Christian Holiday To Me

I don’t have the best memory of childhood, so forgive me if my recollections are a bit scattershot. 1983-1986: My earliest memories of Christmas are of getting presents and eating big meals at big tables with my mom’s big extended family on Christmas Day and I remember Christmas Eves with the Finckes with my many cousins [Read More…]

“God’s Not Boring”: A Precocious Young Video Maker Evangelizes; Grows Up To Be An Atheist Vlogger.)

In the video below, atheist vlogger Jonny Scaramanga revisits his evangelizing videos he made as a kid. I identified instantly with the adorably earnest younger Jonny here, from the first moment of his presentation. (You can find several posts about my evangelizing Christian childhood here.) And, of course, I wholeheartedly endorse the older Jonny’s critiques. If [Read More…]

Before and After I Deconverted: The Development of My Sexual Imagination

This post is sexually explicit. Don’t read it if that makes you uncomfortable. And it’s about my own personal sexual interests. So you’ve been doubly warned if that makes you doubly uncomfortable. When I deconverted from Christianity at 21 years old I had never had sex. And I had gone to an evangelical Christian college [Read More…]

Maybe Jesus Just Is Not That Into You.

Ex-Christian Neil Carter has written what I think is an instant classic, all about his decision to “break up with Jesus” because the dude just wasn’t answering his calls and e-mails. He goes over the various explanations friends would give for Jesus’s silence: Some said he heard my messages but didn’t answer because what I [Read More…]

Before I Deconverted: “My God Died on the Cross, Not At McDonald’s!”

I attended my first concert at 14. It was at a Christian teen conference, I was a devout evangelical Christian, and the band was Audio Adrenaline. I got to meet them after the show. One of them had actually been a camp counselor at my church camp and had very briefly had a thing with a [Read More…]

Christians as Immoralists

Nietzsche provocatively labels himself an “immoralist”. This is something gleefully seized upon by theists who absurdly think that the logical result of atheism is a total rejection of all morality. Possibly the most famous and unapologetic of all philosophical atheists himself declared himself an “immoralist”! And the word “immoralist” is simply assumed to mean “one who rejects all morality”. So, there you have it. The [Read More…]
