A Philosophy Professor Analyzes God’s Not Dead’s Case For God

This post turned out to be not just a movie review but a nearly comprehensive counter-apologetics case that I intend to refer Christians to in the future. Bart Ehrman Debates Old Testament Scholar on Bible’s Treatment of Suffering

This was an interesting debate. Bart Ehrman, though a non-believer, has all of a preacher’s cadences and appeals to the Bible to make his points, so it is very much a back and forth that feels like it’s taking place on the same turf with the same basic weapons. It’s interesting to see how this [Read More...]

How I Wish The Homosexuality Debate Would Go

Trevin Wax at The Gospel Coalition wrote a hypothetical conversation between an anti-homosexuality Christian pastor and a pro-gay talk show host called “How I Wish the Homosexuality Debate Would Go”. Since this article was recommended on Facebook no less than 18,000 times, I take it that many Christians found it reasonable, likely even taking it to be an ideal representation of their own views. So, I want to take seriously this Christian speaking for many other Christians in his own fictional representative’s words. In this post, I offer the remarks I would make were I also on this show, responding to the hypothetical pastor’s each comment. [Read more...]

A Christian Friend Told Me This Video Made Him Pro-Gay

A Christian friend told me this video convinced him homosexuality wasn’t sinful after all. So, I figured I would offer it for Christian readers to consider and for pro-gay friends, whether Christian or otherwise, to pass on to their Christian friends, whether they be pro-gay or anti-gay. [Read more...]

“It’s amazing what some people will justify through their religion, isn’t it?”

Why should it be amazing that people who adhere to their religions sincerely actually adopt the regressive or militaristic values often explicitly attributed to their god or gods in their sacred writings themselves? Isn’t that what you would expect? That they would believe in and adopt the values of their sacred texts? Let’s stop equating religion with goodness just because religions say they are the arbiters of morality and its best promoters. [Read more...]

Is There Any Theological Basis For Making Opposition To Homosexuality and Abortion Tests of Christian Orthodoxy?

In this post, I am not interested in discussing what the “true” teachings of Christianity are. Partially this is because I don’t think there is any such thing as “true Christianity”. I do not think there is any reason to call “true Christianity” only those fundamentalist interpretations of the faith which claim (dubiously) to just obediently defer to [Read More...]

Robert M. Price’s Podcast “The Human Bible”

Robert M. Price is an amusing, charismatic, and atheistic scholar of the Bible. Since February he has been doing a radio show/podcast for the Center For Inquiry called “The Human Bible”, wherein he explains all the ins and outs of the Bible from a scholarly and skeptical perspective. Below the fold are brief episode summaries [Read More...]

A Sermon on Gay Marriage

For those who need to hear facts from a pulpit before they’ll believe them, the articulate and well researched sermon below might be of some use. I even learned a few things. Consider passing it on to the religious people against gay rights in your life. via The Dixie Flatline Your Thoughts? [Read more...]

Students Walk Out On Dan Savage Criticizing The Bible

This is fantastic: a living symbolic depiction of Bible believers’ closed-minded resistance to challenges that they cannot answer and so refuse to even listen to. And Savage’s response to their walking out is great too. It’s like a work of art but real. Plug your ears and sing “la la la” all you want, Christians, [Read More...]
