How To Criticize Religion. Part 3: Address The Question of “True Religion” With Nuance

Below is part 3 of my reprint of my “How To Criticize Religion” series, with one new paragraph added. This was originally published in the former Secularite digital magazine. This article is self-sufficient. No knowledge of Part 1: Understand Why and How Metaphors Work in Practice or Part 2: Don’t Treat All of Religion as a Monolith is assumed in what [Read More...]

How to Criticize Religion. Part 1: Understand Why and How Metaphors Work in Practice

Some atheists see no need to understand religions in detail. They’ll say, “Just as one needn’t be a ‘unicornologist’ to justify a nonbelief in unicorns, one needn’t know the intricacies of theology to justify a nonbelief in gods. If religious beliefs are irrationally derived and systematically false, their particulars don’t matter.” Now it is true [Read More...]

For The Bible Tells Me So, A Documentary Chronicling Conservative Christian Homophobia

Since Tuesday, I have been talking about the devastating impact of the conservative Christian church on LGBT youth. The other night, via an old Libby Anne post I serendipitously happened upon this relevant documentary called For the Bible Tells Me So, which is all about how conservative Christians demonize gays and what it’s like growing up gay [Read More...]

Islam Is Not A Race–But Anti-Muslim Bigotry Is Still Very Often Racist

As a particular sociocultural phenomenon, “New Atheism” is usually traced back to the anti-faith backlash many Westerners were prone towards in the wake of 9/11. For Christopher Hitchens, it was 9/11 that crystallized his years of criticism of religion and focused his energies more centrally on opposing religion than he ever had before, turning him in [Read More...]

Empowerment Ethics: “How Can Atheists Condemn Rape Without Theistic Moral Absolutism?”

This blog post is a new installment of my “Empowerment Ethics” series, in which I systematically explain, develop, defend, and apply my distinctive spin on humanist, perfectionist, virtue, consequentialist, ethical system called “Empowerment Ethics”. In response to my most recent repost in this series, about why moralities don’t need to be conceived of in moral absolutist terms in order [Read More...]

Dear Fellow Atheists, STOP Saying Christians Believe God is a Bearded Man in the Sky. They Don’t.

Not what any Christians think God is. Christians know full well God is not an old human being with a beard. God couldn't be that because God is not "a" being at all. God is the Ground of all Being. God is Being Itself. It is silly anthropomorphism to think of God as a human being.

So, I’m an atheist blogger and a professional philosopher. So this puts me in the unenviable position of having to deal with ignorant atheists who not only disparage philosophy but disparage sophisticated theology without understanding it. And honestly it makes me wince sometimes. I believe we can do better. We can make better arguments that [Read More...]

“God’s Not Dead” Fans, I Dare You To Study The Existence of God With Me, a Real Atheist Philosophy Professor.

This post is periodically updated from its original to keep the information current.  I spent 11 years teaching philosophy at universities and I am an outspoken atheist blogger. So, I took special interest in the mean-spirited mischaracterization of people like me in the evangelical Christian movie God’s Not Dead, in which an atheist philosophy professor [Read More...]
