It’s About What The 1st Amendment Should Mean

James Croft perfectly makes a few points about American Atheists’ and Freedom From Religion Foundation’s criticisms of the proposed Holocaust memorial using the Star of David: Even if there was a constitutional problem with the memorial, I would argue that that would represent a problem with the our interpretation of constitution, and not with the memorial. I  do not [Read More...]

Is Religion the Enemy of Feminism?

This was a really stimulating debate moderated by the president of NOW and hosted by Wichita NOW. The participants were Rev. Robin McGonigle (senior minister of University Congregational Church and associate member of the Jesus Seminar) and Amanda Knief (former Secular Coalition lobbyist, the current managing director of the American Atheists, and author of the great looking forthcoming book, The Citizen Lobbyist: A How-to Manual for Making Your Voice Heard in Government). Though slightly off the main topic, one of my favorite bits is the two minutes starting at 54:07-56:26, which resonates with my own complaints with the paltriness of religious platitudes in the face of death.

I’m really glad to see this kind of crossover event between a major atheist activist organization and a centrally important progressive activist one. Of late, American Atheists is importantly increasing its outreach to other groups of people for whom atheistic criticisms of theistic religions should be relevant. This is a great example of that. Hopefully we can use this video and forums like this to start dialogues with our progressive religious friends. Spread this video around and look for similar opportunities to have discussions like this where you can.

You Glance Out Your Window and See a Shackled Black Slave and a Slavery-Justifying Bible Verse. What Do You Think?

I am surprised that even having read Sikivu Hutchinson’s detailed and eloquent denunciation of the American Atheists’ billboard featuring a vividly depicted bound African American slave beneath a Bible verse endorsing slavery, a fair amount of people still don’t seem to understand quite what was so wrong with it. So, below the offending picture, I’m [Read More...]

Against American Atheists' Slavery Billboard

In a superb new post, Sikivu Hutchinson, at Black Skeptics (on Freethought Blogs), explains in illuminating detail so much of what is wrong with the incredibly irresponsible and offensive ad the American Atheists put up in Pennsylvania using the picture of a bound slave and a Bible verse supporting slavery (Colossians 3:22), which was aimed [Read More...]

2nd Top Q: “Is It Unfair To Call All Religions ‘Scams’?”

According to the Friendly Atheist, American Atheists are running the ad below in Huntsville, Alabama: Is it fair to call all churches scams?  Obviously there are at least some quite sincere believers.  Do all perpetuations of falsehoods and false promises for profit (of various forms) count as scams?  Or are the only scams those which [Read More...]
