Snuggling with Clarissa

Clarissa, who came to live with us in 1999, is now our "senior" cat. She has always been very sweet-tempered, affectionate, and particularly kind with Rhiannon (when she was younger she used to hop onto Rhiannon's wheelchair and ride around with her, something none of our other cats have ever done). Since we lost our eldest cat, Julian, in 2007, Clarissa has become increasingly bonded with Fran, and often crawls onto Fran as she rests in bed.The other day Clarissa did just that, but also did … [Read more...]

Flawed Love

Part of what has surprised me about the loss of China has been how much my sense of grieving has been shaped by feeling guilty. Of course there's the what-if's surrounding her final illness: "I waited too long to take her to the vet," "My inaction made her suffer," "I waited too long to put her to sleep," "I put her to sleep too soon" (ah, contradictory self-accusations! China (1989-2010)

Loving God, our beloved pet and companion, China, is on her final journey.  We will miss China dearly because of the joy and affection she has given us. Bless China and give her peace. Give us hope that in your great kindness you may restore China in your heavenly kingdom, according to your wisdom, which goes beyond our human understanding. Amen. — Adapted from a prayer in Will I See My Dog in Heaven? by Jack Wi … [Read more...]

The Lion in Winter

My eldest cat, China, is well over 20 years old. The frat boy, who was a true animal lover, came and talked to me to make sure I would be a good “daddy” for the kitten; I must h … [Read more...]

Who’s In Charge? (Purrrrrr….)

In honor of the recent news article from LiveScience.com that reports a study which has finally scientifically proven that cats control their "owners" (I put it in quotation marks because I think it's a coin toss as to who really owns who), I'd like to commend to you this short little video which was produced a few years back, and which pretty much demonstrates a plain truth: that anyone who lives with a cat could have spared those researchers all their effort and money; we just know for a fact … [Read more...]
