Does God = Consciousness?

A reader writes...Carl, I am a theoretical physicist by training and have struggled with the idea of supernatural concepts like God. Even so, contemplation has increased my sense of God being part of me, which I like very much. So here is my question: Do you think it is too radical to say God IS your consciousness? After all, Jesus said, "The Father and I are one."  Personally, it seems wonderful to have such awareness of God 24/7. Since we have no idea what consciousness is, saying it is God … [Read more...]

Quote for the Day

It is a glorious destiny to be a member of the human race, though it is a race dedicated to many absurdities and one which makes many terrible mistakes: yet, with all that, God Himself gloried in becoming a member of the human race. ... As if the sorrows and stupidities of the human condition could overwhelm me, now I realize what we all are. And if only everybody could realize this! But it cannot be explained. There is no way of telling people they are all walking around shining like the sun. … [Read more...]

Nothing in the universe resembles God more than silence. — Meister Eckhart, as quoted by John O'Donohue in Four Elements: Reflections on Nature … [Read more...]

Simplicity and Prayer

In the simple promises for the junior lay associates (Lay Cistercians) of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, we promise, among other things, to live "life in simplicity and prayer." I love that juxtaposition. Prayer and simplicity go together so beautifully, it seems to me, that one of the best ways to cultivate in our hearts the space for prayer is by allowing things to be simple. I don't mean simple in the sense of not very smart, but simple in the sense of what Taoists call wu-wei, or "going … [Read more...]

Simplicity, Silence, Stillness, Solitude

As I seek to move deeper into the contemplative life, I try to keep in mind the gifts of simplicity, silence, and solitude. Simplicity, in choosing to liberate my life from the tyranny of too much "stuff," of too many commitments of my time and energy, of too many causes to which I can devote — and dissipate — my energy. Silence, in letting go not only of external stimuli like the incessant buzz and chatter of the media, music, television, the internet, and so forth, but also the more insidious i … [Read more...]

Everything Has Being By the Love of God

In this same time our Lord showed me a spiritual sight of His homely loving. I saw that He is to us everything that is good and comfortable for us: He is our clothing that for love wraps us, clasps us, and all encloses us for tender love, that He may never leave us; being to us everything that is good, as to my understanding. He also showed me a little thing, the size of a hazelnut, in the palm of my hand; and it was as round as a ball. I looked upon it with the eye of my understanding, and … [Read more...]

Quote for the Day

So just let God act, and be at peace. As far as you are in God, you are in peace; and as far as you are outside God, you are outside peace. Lack of peace comes from created things and not from God. Nor is there anything to fear in God, and nothing in him to cause sadness; his being can draw only love from us. It is true: they who have all they wish for, know joy; but no one has this except those whose will is one with God's will. May God grant us this union! — Meister Eckhart, quoted i … [Read more...]
