Quote for the Day

Goodness of will in a person is God's infused love, with which a person practices the things of God and all the virtues. Goodness of will is God's grace and our own supernatural life, with which we struggle against every sin and win the victory. United with God's grace, a good will sets us free, raising us up above ourselves and uniting us with God in a contemplative way of life. In turning inward to God, a good will is a spirit crowned with eternal love, while in turning outward it is the … [Read more...]

The Eucharistic Prayer of John Ruusbroec

The following prayer comes from the 14th century Flemish mystic John Ruusbroec, also known as John Ruysbroeck. I think it's one of the loveliest examples of eucharistic spirituality that I have ever come across. It comes from his work called "A Mirror of Eternal Blessedness" and this translation is taken from The Spiritual Espousals and Other Works, published by Paulist Press. Lord, you have said, "Without me you can do nothing." You have also said, "unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, … [Read more...]

The Contemplative Life is a Heavenly Life

Blessed John Ruusbroec says, toward the end of his masterpiece The Spiritual Espousals, that "the contemplative life is a heavenly life."In The Big Book of Christian Mysticism, I describe mysticism as "living in heaven consciousness." (We'll see if that phrase survives the editing process, but I like it, so I think it will).I just read on Twitter where somebody quoted Thich Nhat Hanh as saying "The peace movement can write very good protest letters, but they are not yet able to write a love … [Read more...]

“An enlightened power of reason and a love common to all”

John Ruusbroec (1293-1381) is one of the greatest of the Christian mystics. His masterpiece, The Spiritual Espousals (sometimes translated as The Adornment of the Spiritual Marriage) in my opinion belongs on the short list of "must read" classics of western mysticism. Here is just a taste of the poetic breadth of his wisdom. At one point in the book he writes about the various gifts of the Holy Spirit as described in Isaiah 11. One of these gifts, Understanding, can be seen as comprising … [Read more...]

Quote for the Day

The grace of God is to God himself as sunlight is to the sun — a means and a way leading us to the latter. It therefore shines within us in a simple, one-fold way and makes us deiform, that is, like God. This likeness constantly sinks away, dying in God and becoming and remaining one with him, for charity makes us become one with God and causes us to remain living in union with him. — Blessed John Ruusbroec, The Spiritual Espousals … [Read more...]

Quote for the Day

Charity keeps a person constantly facing the fathomless goodness of God from which charity flows forth, in order that the person might live honorably for God and persevere and grow in all the virtues and in genuine humility. Righteousness keeps a person facing the eternal truth of God, in order that he might be open to the truth and become enlightened and fulfill all the virtues without going astray. Humility keeps a person facing the great majesty of God, in order that he might remain small and … [Read more...]
