CBB Review – Rediscover Jesus: An Invitation

Many of us likely feel we have a pretty good relationship with our savior Jesus Christ. Well….you’re probably wrong. Not that we are to blame, we may not even know it. If you open Matthew Kelly’s latest book Rediscover Jesus: An Invitation, you will find out pretty quickly that we have room for improvement. Thankfully Matthew gives us the tools to make it happen.

The book is broken into forty chapters. As stated in the beginning of the book you can either read it from cover to cover as you would any book or take some time digesting it and using it as a forty day reader in a personal retreat format. Either way as Matthew puts it “You are holding this in your hand at this moment for a reason. I don’t know what God has in store for you, but I am excited for you.” The chapters are a couple pages long each and conclude with a Point to Ponder, a Verse to Live, a Question to Consider, and a short Prayer.

Right out of the gate you know you are embarking on more than just another book. It is a journey, a “new beginning” as chapter one so truly states. What I considered to be the foundation of the book that Matthew builds upon comes in Chapter four and this is….the Jesus Question. That question is the second one Jesus poses to his disciples in Caesarea Phillipi….”who do you say I am?” That is a question that resonates from the pages of the Gospel Matthew down through 2000 years and is posed to us today. Who is Jesus to each of us? Have you truly contemplated this question? As you work your through the next thirty-six chapters you will surely have a better understanding and appreciation for who Jesus is and what role he plays in your own life.

As I worked my way through the book one paragraph jumped out at me that I will share here:

“I might as well tell you now. We have been dancing all around it. Jesus wants to turn your life upside-down – which, as it turns out will be right side up. He wants to turn your marriage upside down, your parenting upside down, your personal finances upside down, your health and well-being upside down, your school and church upside down. If you let Jesus turn your life upside down, you will be happier than you ever imagined was possible. And you won’t just have happiness – you will have joy!”

The one thing we must realize is that we all have room for improvement. Every so often a book comes along that aids us in that constant struggle. Matthew Kelly’s book Rediscover Jesus is a gem that will help readers attain a more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. From the beginning of the book where the Jesus Question is asked to the three-step process to a deeper relationship with Christ this book is sure to be one that deserves a welcome spot on every Catholics bookshelf.
