Visit the poor house of my soul, Mary: Day 208 February 14, 2016

St. Alphonsus urges Our Lady to come visit his soul in the same way she visited St. Elizabeth, bringing abundant graces with her.

Immaculate and Blessed Virgin, I will always thank my Lord for having granted me the grace to know you. Oh, my Queen! You hurried so quickly to visit St. Elizabeth, and in that way you sanctified her dwelling. Deign, then, to visit, and visit quickly, the poor house of my soul.
Oh, hurry! For you well know, and far better than I do, how poor it is, and with how many maladies it’s afflicted: with disordered affections, evil habits, and sins committed, all of which are pernicious diseases that will lead me to eter- nal death. You can enrich my soul, Treasurer of God, and you can heal all its infirmities.

Visit me, then, in life, and visit me especially at the moment of death, for then, more than ever, I’ll need your help. Indeed, I don’t expect you to visit me on this earth with your visible presence, as you’ve visited so many of your ser- vants. For they weren’t as unworthy and ungrateful as I am.

Even so, I’ll be satisfied to see you in the kingdom of heaven, there to be able to love you more, and thank you for all that you’ve done for me. For now, I’ll be satisfied if you’ll visit me with your mercy. Your prayers are all that I desire. —St. Alphonsus Liguori, The Glories of Mary

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
In what specific ways today does “the poor house of my soul” need repairs? Am I satisfied to have Mary visit me invisibly with her graces, as long as I’m able in the end to see her and her Son when I go to live with them forever?

CLOSING PRAYER
From a prayer of St. Alphonsus: O my Mother, extend your hand to a poor creature who has fallen and asks your help. Were I a saint, I need not seek your mercy; but because I am a sinner, I flee to thee, I turn to you; in you I confide.
