My daughter Katie reviews the second in Daniel McInerny’s Patria series below. You can read review of the first book, Stout Hearts & Whizzing Biscuits: A Patria Story, here.

Oliver Stoop’s adventures in Patria continue in the second book in the Patria series – Stoop of Mastodon Meadow by Daniel McInerny. The lovable characters Princess Rose and her brother Farnsworth return for another adventure in this book full of more humor, suspense, and quirks of the Kingdom of Patria.

Oliver’s dad decided that since he was the ambassador between Patria and the U.S.A., Oliver should be enrolled in the boys’ school of Patria – Mastodon Meadow. Morning dawned the first day of school, but something was astir. A strange newspaper called “The Avenger” arrived on the doorstep of the castle. It was authored by the mysterious school groups called the Brotherhood of the Tusk and the Sisterhood of the Salon. Farnsworth knew exactly what was amidst – the Brotherhood was an old school group of boys from Mastodon Meadow. They are a “motley band of thieves, marauders, thugs, hooligans, gangsters, and outright No-goodniks.” Things get a lot worse when Oliver, Farnsworth, and Rose are accused of publishing the newspaper. To clear their name and stop the troublemakers, the kids form a group of detectives, “Vesuvius, Stoop, & Co.,” and begin to uncover what is really going on in Mastodon Meadow – and the true culprit is definitely not one you’d expect!

This book is a wonderful read that won’t let its readers put it down until the end. Daniel McInerny has once again kept his readers turning the pages with the second installment of the Land of Patria series. This book is as captivating and hilarious as the first with adventure around every corner for the detectives keeping the readers on their toes questioning until the end whether “Vesuvius, Stoop, & Co.” will uncover the true culprit. This book was a captivating sequel to the first book, and I hope Mr. McInerny plans on releasing more of these amazing reads!
