St. Alphonsus imagines Mary’s grief as she holds her Son’s lifeless body.

Devout souls, listen to what the sorrowful Mary says on the day of her Son’s death: “My beloved children, I don’t want you to try to console me. No, for my soul is no longer capable of consolation in this world after the death of my dear Jesus.” My sovereign Lady, since you won’t be consoled, and you have so great a thirst for sufferings, I must tell you: Even with the death of your Son, your sorrows haven’t ended. On this day you will be wounded by another sword of sorrow: A cruel lance will pierce the side of your Son already dead, and you must receive him in your arms after he’s taken down from the Cross.

And now we must consider the sixth sorrow that afflicted this poor mother. Listen and weep! Until now the sorrows of Mary tortured her one by one. On this day they are all united to assail her. A devout author says that when our beloved Redeemer was dead, the first care of the great mother was to accom- pany in spirit the most holy soul of her Son, and present it to the Eternal Father. “I present you, my God,” Mary must then have said, “the immaculate soul

of your Son and mine. He has now obeyed you to the point of death. Receive him, then, in your arms. Your justice is now satisfied, your will is accomplished. Look! The great sacrifice to your eternal glory is consummated.” Then, turning toward the lifeless limbs of her Jesus: “Wounds of love, I adore you, and in you I rejoice. For through you, salvation is given to the world. You will remain open in the body of my Son, and be the refuge of those who turn to you. How many, through you, will receive the pardon of their sins, and by you be enflamed with love for God!” —St. Alphonsus Liguori, The Glories of Mary

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

If I had held the lifeless body of Jesus, what would I have said to him? What would I have said to his heavenly Father?

CLOSING PRAYER

From the “The Seven Dolors of Mary at the Death of Jesus”: O grief-stricken mother, what did you experience when, after the dead body of your Son had been taken down from the Cross, it was laid in your virginal arms and bathed with your tears? You were spared no suffering as you beheld the large wounds in his hands and feet!
