For three years, Ramona worked as the manager of a Planned Parenthood abortion-referral facility in Sherman, Texas. In the spring of 2011, thanks to the inspiration from a local Christian radio station, the prayers and public witness of a 40 Days for Life campaign, and through God’s grace, Ramona reclaimed her walk with Christ and resigned her position at Planned Parenthood, which resulted in the clinic closing.

Ramona is now sharing the story of her pro-life conversion and resulting exodus from the organization responsible for the most abortions in the United States.

A native of Trenton, Texas, a small town northeast of Dallas, Ramona is married to a wonderful man and they have four children.

Recently Julie and Ramona discussed her book Redeemed by Grace: A Catholic Woman’s Journey to Planned Parenthood and Back. You can read Julie’s review of the book here.

JULIE: First of all, I would like to thank you for writing this book. I needed to hear what you had to say.  Your story has become part of my spiritual journey.  I used to think that abortion would be understandable in the case of rape or incest, but when I learned about partial-birth abortions about 16 years ago, I was repulsed and started looking into what the Catholic Church’s stance is on abortions and why.  Even though I was raised in a Catholic home, I don’t recall ever discussing what the church teaches and why, so much of the last 18 years has been spent learning about what it means to be a practicing Catholic. So, as I read your story, I could relate.  I understand the concept of things not really being on one’s radar and making certain decisions because of that.

RAMONA TREVINO: First, I want to thank you for your comments and kind words. It is a great blessing to hear that my story has in some way blessed them and/or challenged them to think differently. Thank you for sharing that with me, and I appreciate being given the opportunity to answer some of your questions.

JULIE: It is clear throughout your book that seeds were planted along the way that led you to finally leaving your job as the manager of a Planned Parenthood Clinic. When you look back at those seeds what thoughts go through your mind?

RAMONA TREVINO: I am a woman of great faith, although it’s obvious I failed miserably at living that faith out most of my life. As I reflect back over the course of the seeds being planted, I can’t help but to be humbled by the ways in which God loves each and every one of us. It became very clear to me how He works. He is a good, loving and patient father; granting us free will to choose. The seeds were planted in way in which they needed to be in accordance to my own individual and unique personality. That is why I am in awe. God knows me, and He knows how to reach me. Just as he knows how to reach each and every one of us. It is up to us to choose light, or to be lost in the darkness.
JULIE: I occasionally stand outside abortion clinics praying peacefully for all involved in the abortion industry. If you could speak to everyone who does that, what would you say?

RAMONA TREVINO: I get asked this question quite often, and I never tire of answering it. Don’t lose faith, hope or the ability to love. We will never know (this side of heaven) how our peaceful and prayerful presence will, can or has impacted the lives of those around us. Never. That’s why these stories of conversion are so important. It proves that people of faith who approach the abortion facilities in a spirit of hope and a heart ready to love have the ability, with God’s grace, to change and save lives.

JULIE: We hear in the media that there is a “war on women.”  While I agree that there is a war on women, as I look around at all the poverty, drug use, rage, and suicides, I am certain that politicians and I differ in our beliefs as to how that war is being waged.  What are your thoughts on the real war on women?

RAMONA TREVINO: I think we can agree that the real war on women is being waged on the abortionist’s table. It is there where women are being deeply wounded, body, mind, and soul. They have been lied to over and over again by the abortion industry telling them that the only path to liberation is by killing their unborn children, which only results in more female casualties. The fallout from this “war” is not limited to women alone.  Men are also casualties, and suffer greatly from lost fatherhood. If we ignore the fact that men are negatively impacted or affected by abortion, it only perpetuates the ideas behind the mantra, “My body. My choice.”

JULIE: Since publishing the book, what does your life look like now?

RAMONA TREVINO: My life hasn’t changed much, with the exception of our newest addition to the family! Our newest baby was born just days after the book was published a little over a year ago. I’m very busy as a wife and mother to our three youngest children. I’ll also be wearing the hat of an educator soon, as we transition to homeschool for the first time. I continue to travel some, when the Lord calls, to share my testimony and experiences at Planned Parenthood. That’s always a huge blessing. But, most recently, I signed on as a Training Assistant (as needed) for my friend’s ministry, Sidewalk Advocates for Life, where I will help train people who feel called to sidewalk advocacy, better known as sidewalk counseling.

JULIE: Thank you for your time. I have one last question since this is a blog on books, what are you reading now?

RAMONA TREVINO: I always wish I had more time to read. It’s almost an impossible task for me to accomplish with my busy schedule, but I am currently trying to read “How To Find Your Soulmate Without Losing Your Soul” by Jason and Crystalina Evert. Obviously, I’ve already found my soulmate, but the subject matter is so important for anyone who defends the sanctity and dignity of the human person.
