Angels speak to God in admiration, Angels: Day 065 September 24, 2016

How do angels “speak”  to God? Their love and admiration are clear speechsays St. Gregory the Great. When they contemplate God, they feel in themselves the emotions that Revelation expresses in words: “Worthy  is the Lamb who was slain.”

But the angels speak to God in a different way. For example, in the Rev- elation of John they say, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom” (Rev. 5:12). The voice of the angels praising God is itself simply the admiration of inner contemplation.

To be speechless at the wonders of divine goodness is to speak with a voice. The emotion of the heart moved with a feeling of awe is a powerful voice when it speaks to the ears of a Spirit that has no limits. This voice seems to unfold itself in distinct words, while it shapes itself in the countless different ways of admiration.

So God speaks to angels when they perceive his inner will as it is revealed to them. But angels speak to the Lord when, by contemplating what is above them, they rise up to emotions of admiration. –St. Gregory the Great,  Moralia in Job, 2.8-9

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

When I contemplate the divine, what do my emotions speak in the ear of the Spirit? Is my speech a clear hymn of praise like the angels’ or is it all mixed up with the cares of the day?

CLOSING PRAYER

Holy  angels, who never cease praising, teach me to bring to the Lord a pure sacrifice of thanksgiving.
