God speaks to angels in their contemplation, Angels: Day 066

God speaks to angels in their contemplation, Angels: Day 066 September 25, 2016

angels_gregory_the_great_3God speaks to angels in their contemplation

God doesnt really give verbal commands  to the angels, says  St. Gregory thGreat. Instead, by contemplating God, which is their greatest delight, the angels understand what God wills them to do.

But, again, we need to understand that, even when an incorporeal nature is said to “speak,” it does not always “speak” in the same way. There is one way in which God speaks to the angels, and another in which the angels speak to God. God speaks to the souls of the saints in one way, and the souls of the saints speak to God in another way. And God speaks to the devil in one way, and the devil speaks to God in another way.

Since there is no barrier in the way of a spiritual being, God speaks to the holy angels just by revealing his mysterious secrets to their hearts, so that, just by contemplating the truth, they read what they are supposed to do. The delights of contemplation are like a kind of vocal command to them. What is inspired in them when they contemplate is as if it were spoken to them, and they heard it. –St. Gregory the Great,  Moralia in Job, 2.8-9

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Do I set aside some time just for contemplation, trying to hear God the way the angels hear him? Does it help me understand God’s will for me?

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, let me praise you, sing of you, bless you, worship  you, glorify you, and give you thanks together with the many-eyed Cherubim and the six-winged Seraphim who surround your throne.
