angels_ephrem_1The mystery of the Seraphim

St. Ephrem the Syrian poetically describes the mysteries of divine things. Even the six wings of the Seraphim is an idea too high and too deep for us to search out.

In the beginning God created all things, and his Thought was with him without any beginning. He did not think as a human thinks; he was not moved in any new way, as a child of flesh is moved. His movement was not new, nor was his thought fresh. But his knowledge comes before times and transcends beginnings.

The natures of the Seraphim are concealed from us, so that we must ask how an angel has six wings, and what its wings are, and where they are, and how a spirit needs to fly by means of wings.

Is this a parable, or is it plain truth? If it is truth, it is a very hidden one. If it is a metaphor, it is a very perplexing one.

That infinite hidden Being, then, is withdrawn from us, and searching into him is too deep for feeble men, and seeking after him too high for mortals. Who shall fly up to his height, or search out his depths? –St. Ephrem the Syrian,  Rhythm 26

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

When Scripture is too deep or hard for me to understand, where do I look for guidance? Have I asked the angels themselves for their help in understanding them?

CLOSING PRAYER

Guardian Angel, be my guide as I contemplate the mysteries of Scripture, and help me have patience when I cannot understand everything at once.
