Keep the creed all your life; Angels: Day 135

Keep the creed all your life; Angels: Day 135 December 3, 2016

angels_cyril_of_jerusalem_1St. Cyril of  Jerusalem advises his students to memorize  the creed word for word, and to keep it fresh in their memories all their lives. If  you know your creed, he says, you know everything important about the Christian faith.

But as a learner, and in your profession of faith, take and hold only that faith which the Church delivers to you, and which is established from all Scripture.

Not everyone can read Scripture: some are uneducated, and others are too busy. Therefore we encompass all the whole doctrine of the faith in a few articles, so that the soul may not perish for lack of instruction. I want you to remember these articles word for word, and repeat it diligently among yourselves. Do not write it on paper, but get it by memory and engrave it on your heart as if it were on a monument.

I want you to keep this creed all through your life as a provision for your journey, and never receive any other creed besides this—even if I myself should change and contradict what I am teaching you now, or even if some opposing angel, transformed into an angel of light, should try to lead you astray. “But even if we, or an angel from Heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we preached to you, let him be accursed” (Gal. 1:8). –St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture 5, 6

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Who are the “angels of light” who might try to persuade me to accept a different creed? How can I recognize them?

CLOSING PRAYER

Guardian Angel, keep the truth of the creed in my mind, and help me distinguish false spirits who would lead me away from the True Faith.
