Against Principalities and Powers; Angels: Day 137

Against Principalities and Powers; Angels: Day 137 December 5, 2016

angels_augustine_1As long as we’re sinners, says St. Augustine, we’re slaves to the devil and his angels. Our life on earth is a struggle against their dominion.

The Lord sent his lambs into the midst of wolves—that is, righteous men into the midst of sinners, to preach the gospel received in the time of man from the inestimable divine Wisdom, so that he might call us from sin to righteousness.

But what the Apostle says, that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against Principalities and Powers (Eph. 6:12), and the other things that have been quoted, this means that the devil and his angels, like us, have fallen and lapsed by sin, and have secured possession of earthly things—that is, sinful human beings, who, as long as we are sinners, are under their yoke; just as when we shall be righteous, we shall be under the yoke of righteousness. And we contend against them, so that passing over to righteousness we may be freed from their dominion. –St. Augustine, Disputation Against Fortunatus, 23

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Do I struggle against the evil Principalities and Powers as much as I should? Or do I often end up letting them have their way?

CLOSING PRAYER

Compassionate  and merciful God, do not withhold  your aid from me in my struggle with the devil.
