Angels don’t stand between us and Christ; Angels: Day 138

Angels don’t stand between us and Christ; Angels: Day 138 December 6, 2016

angels_augustine_2Like many Christian interpreters, St. Augustine sees Psalm 24 as a description of Christ’s triumphal ascent into Heaven. Angels are powerful beings and have their role in managing the world, he says, but we dont worship them. Only the Lord is King of Glory.

“Who is this King of glory?” (Ps. 24:10).

What, you too, “prince of the power of the air” (Eph. 2:2)—you marvel and ask, “Who is this King of glory?”

“The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.”

Yes, his body is now made alive again. He who was tempted marches above you; he who was tempted by the angel, the deceiver, goes above all angels.

So none of you had better put himself in front of us and stand in our way, trying to make us worship him as a god. Neither Principalities, nor Angels, nor Powers, will separate us from the love of Christ (Rom. 8:38-39).

It is good to trust in the Lord, rather than to trust in a prince. “Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord” (1 Cor. 1:31). Angels certainly are powers in the administration of this world, but the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. –St. Augustine, Exposition on Psalm 24, 10

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
Do I recognize that when I prevail over temptation, I inherit greater glory? Do I ask the angels to minister to me as they ministered to Christ in the desert of temptation?

CLOSING PRAYER
Angel of God, come to me when I am tempted. Give me light, wisdom, hope, strength, and joy to sustain me in my every struggle.
