Learn to recognize Satan in disguise; Angels: Day 141 December 9, 2016

angels_augustine_4Satan can transform himself  into an angel of light, says St. Augustine. If  hdoes, we need to rely on the help of God to keep us on the right path, and to teach us to see through Satans disguise.

It’s very important to be able to see and know when Satan has trans- formed himself into an angel of light; otherwise, by deceiving us that way, he could seduce us into doing real damage.

There’s no danger to our religion when he only deceives our bodily senses, and doesn’t turn our minds from the true and correct judgment that guides our life of faith. Even if he pretends to be good and does or says things that a good angel would say, and he fools us that way, the mistake isn’t dangerous; it can’t kill our Christian faith.

But when he starts to lead us into his own ways with this strange trickery, then we really have to be on the alert to recognize him and not follow him. How few of us can avoid his deadly schemes, unless God guides and saves us!

But the fact that it’s so difficult to recognize Satan’s tricks is actually useful in one way: it reminds us that no one can put his hope in himself, or in any other person. Everyone who belongs to God should throw his hope in with God. Certainly no religious person would deny that this is the best way for us.                         –St. Augustine, Enchiridion, chapter 16

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

What tools has God given us to distinguish the deceptions of Satan? How do I make use of them?

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, humble the enemies of your Church, and put Satan behind us.
