The Lord of hosts is with us; Angels: Day 180

The Lord of hosts is with us; Angels: Day 180 January 17, 2017

angels_augustine_1As the psalm says, not just an angel, not just a host of angels, but the Lord of all the angels is with us—the Lord who came to make us equal to the angels. What  can we possibly  fear, St. Augustine asks, if  we have the Lord himself on our side?

The Lord of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our refuge (Ps. 46:7).

Not any man, not any power, not, in short, an angel, or any creature either earthly or heavenly, but the Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our ref- uge. He who sent angels, came after angels, came so that angels might serve him, came to make human beings equal to angels.

What powerful grace! If God is for us, who can be against us? “The Lord of hosts is with us.” What Lord of hosts is with us? As I say, “If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things with him?” (Rom. 8:31-32).

Let us be secure, then, and cultivate a good conscience in tranquility of heart with the bread of the Lord. –St. Augustine, Exposition on Psalm 46, 10

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Is my heart tranquil, or is my conscience troubled? Will knowing that God him- self—who made beings as powerful as angels—fights on my side help me overcome my troubles?

CLOSING PRAYER

Help me to remain in peace, Lord, knowing that not only is my angel with me, but you who created that angel, are with me as well.
