When do we get guardian angels?; Angel: Day 214 February 22, 2017

angels_origenOrigen, one of the Churchs earliest theologians, tries to work out the truth about guardian angels. When are they assigned to us? He finds several passages in Scripture that seem to indicate we have them from birth.

We might ask at what time those who are called “their angels” assume guardianship of the little ones pointed out by Christ. Did they receive this com- mission to discharge concerning them, when, by “the washing of regeneration” (Tit. 3:5), through which they were born as new-born babes, they “long for the pure spiritual milk” (1 Pet. 2:2) which is without guile, and no longer are in subjec- tion to any wicked power? Or were they appointed from birth, according to the foreknowledge and predestination of God, over those whom God also foreknew, and foreordained to be conformed to the glory of the Christ? (Rom. 8:29).

With reference to the view that they have angels from birth, we might quote, “he who had set me apart before I was born” (Gal. 1:15), and “Upon thee I have leaned from my birth,” and “you are he who took me from my mother’s womb” (Ps. 71:6), and, in the epistle of Jude, “To them that are beloved in God the Father and are kept for Jesus Christ, being called” ( Jude 1)—“kept” meaning kept com- pletely by the angels who keep them. –Origen, Commentary on Matthew,  13.27

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Have I cultivated a real relationship with my guardian angel, who knows me more intimately than anyone in my family?

CLOSING PRAYER

Guardian Angel, stay near me, and at the end of my life deliver my soul so that, with you, I may praise the goodness of God forever.
