Believe the angels if nothing; Angels: Day 249

Believe the angels if nothing; Angels: Day 249 March 29, 2017

angels_ambrose_1At a time when Arian heretics threatened to take over the Church, St. Ambrose reminds us that the angels themselves have declared that Christ was divine, and that he was to be born of a virgin.

But if they will not believe the doctrines of the clergy, let them believe the revealed word of Christ. Let them believe the admonitions of angels who say, “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” Let them give credit to the Creed of the Apostles, which the Roman Church has always kept and preserved undefiled.

Mary heard the voice of the angel before she had said, “How shall this be?” She didn’t ask because she had no faith that God could do what he said. After- wards she replied, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it unto me according to thy word.”

This is the virgin who conceived. This is the virgin who brought forth a Son. For thus it is written, “Behold a Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son”; declaring not only that she should conceive as a virgin, but also that she bring forth as a virgin. –St. Ambrose, Letter 42, 5

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

When I hear the Word of God, am I willing to give the same assent that Mary gave? Do I remember that angels themselves have brought the Word to human beings?

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, with your Blessed and Ever-Virgin Mother, Mary, Mother of God, let me listen to the Word you have sent your angels to proclaim.
