Holy Week Viewing: 7 Films About Jesus

We're about to enter the most important week of the Christian faith. As we commemorate Palm Sunday this weekend, our attention will then turn from the Triumphal Entry to the road to Gethsemane in preparation for Good Friday and Easter. And as such, I find it might be an interesting time to revisit films about Jesus.Over the years, I've come to love movies about Jesus. Cinema gives us the great opportunity to view this beloved story from different angles and through a variety of viewpoints, … [Read more...]

My favorite (non-movie) pop culture of 2016!

2016 is coming to a close. And while there are a lot of reasons to be happy that we're saying goodbye to this year, let's not forget that this wasn't a terrible year in every area. True, we might be skipping toward the apocalypse. But at least there were some fun diversions along the way.My post for the best movies of 2016 will be coming later. I hope to have it up before the new year, but the fall has been so busy that I'm behind on movies. There are a few I need to see before I put the … [Read more...]

5 pieces of pop culture to help you endure the election

The election. I know, I'm sick of it, too. But take heart: November 8 is less than a month away. One month from now, the political ads will stop, a candidate will have been chosen, and we'll begin the difficult work of moving on.I doubt there are many undecided voters left. Whether you're casting a ballot for Donald Trump (shudder), Hillary Clinton (a slightly less violent shudder), a third party, or abstaining all together (which is your right), you've probably already chosen your side and … [Read more...]

The Monthly Catch: Wilderpeople, Beatles, Raiders and more!

If you're a constant reader, you've probably noticed my productivity has dropped a notch (or several) recently. This post was originally supposed to go live at the end of September, and here we are well into October. Well, there's a reason for that: it's back-to-school time. I started grad school the day after Labor Day, pursuing a master's in communications with an emphasis in media studies, and it's a lot of work. On top of that, the kids are getting older, work is getting busy, we've had some … [Read more...]

The Monthly Catch: Harry Potter, Sing Street, Kubo and more

I can't believe we're September already (sorry, this is coming a day late). It's been a fast summer, and it feels like it was just yesterday that I was gearing up for Memorial Day weekend. Now we're prepping for Labor Day, the start of school and cooler weather. It's been a busy month, both on the blog and in my personal life. But there's still a lot I read and watched that I wasn't able to write about, so here is your annual roundup of what I was loving during the past four weeks!  … [Read more...]

The BBC 100 Greatest Films list presents a learning opportunity

I love lists.I know that's not the critically correct thing to say — most critics go to great pains to say how much they hate compiling lists and how ranking art is futile, even as they regularly churn out their own best-of lists each year. And, of course, they're right. Ranking art as "best" is silly. In any given year, there are great comedies, moving dramas, superb genre pieces and whimsical animated experiments. How do you determine which of those has more value than the other? But "b … [Read more...]

5 Reasons ‘Stranger Things’ is Great

If you read my July wrap up, you know that I've been obsessed with Netflix's new series, "Stranger Things." I'm not alone; you can't go online without another entertainment site talking about the Duffer Brothers' creepy love letter to the 1980s.I can't remember the last time I raced through a show so quickly; maybe "Breaking Bad." My wife and I finished the show in a three-episode marathon Sunday night, and my first impulse was to watch it again (I didn't). It's been a long time since I've … [Read more...]

The Monthly Catch: “Stranger Things,” BoJack, Star Trek and more!

I cannot believe we're at the end of August already. We're having an incredibly busy summer here, with family events, vacations, busy work schedules and more, and it's hard to accept that there's only a month left before we have to start shifting gears into fall. There was quite a bit going on in July, and I'm amazed that I still found time to write anything at all, let alone consume more media to write about here. So, let's get into what interested me this month that I just haven't had the time … [Read more...]

5 Movies Your Kids Must See

As a film lover and a parent, I get frustrated easily. My 4-year-old son is growing up in the age of Netflix, and it's all too easy for him to be bombarded by whatever kiddie junk is available for streaming. I'm glad my son's turning into a superhero geek and a Star Wars nut, but I'm also dismayed by how much he loves "The Penguins of Madagascar" and (shudder) "Minions." Granted, he's 4, so of course he likes these things. But as a discerning film watcher, I want to be able to steer him toward … [Read more...]

Halftime: The best films of 2016 (so far)

We're quickly approaching the midpoint of the year, and it's been an interesting one. If you look at the box office reports, it's been a blase year, unless you're Disney. But in terms of quality, it's not been bad. Usually, I reach the midpoint of the year and wonder if I'm going to be able to have enough to fill a top ten list in six months. This year, I already have at least five films that I know will kill me to leave off the year-end list. So I thought, in the interest of getting … [Read more...]
