The Indie Rock Pastor of the Evangelical World? What do you think of this guy?
From what I’ve seen of him, I don’t mind him. A guy I work with heads a Firefighters for Christ arm and was getting flack for sending out a sermon from a guy who preaches so openly about sex. Some choice quotes from one of his correspondants:
It’s time these men heard from the Christian remnant who find things like the public discussion of homosexual-style sex for married couples repugnant.
Mark Driscoll strutting back and forth on the platform, shoving sex in your face once again, and in graphic terms that conjure up images directly at odds with biblical commands for purity.
There is a link on Mark’s website called Christiannymphos.org. I’d like to hear Dr. Lutzer, or John Piper or any of the other brave defenders of the faith justify kinky sex for married couples or how about the Christian wife learning how to be aChristian dominatrix? Mark Driscoll is actively promoting this website. God help you, Mr. Driscoll, and God help the so called Christian leaders who support him in it.
In speaking of the “unfruitful deeds of darkness” in Eph. 5:11-12 (which we know include immorality and impurity from vs.3), Paul states plainly that it is “disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret”. It is one thing to confront unfruitful deeds of darkness (or as Paul writes, to “expose” them). For Mark Driscoll to enjoy speaking of these things is a disgrace.
Because of the nature of the material Driscoll promotes, I will not link to his blog and videos here. A simple online search on Mr. Driscoll’s name along with the word “s-x” will provide more than enough documentation as to what he is doing if you choose to confront some of these speakers and leaders.
Those quotes are pure gold. She actually hyphenated sex. Like when hardcore believer’s hyphenate G-d.
In any case, for my co-worker’s benefit, I did a couple hours’ worth of research and watched one of Driscoll’s hourlong sermons entitled, “Bad Sex, Good Sex.” Or something like it. I found it on Google Video. Though I did put the E back into that naughty word.
I didn’t see anything wrong with what he was talking about. Especially where he is responding to people’s questions, like: Is masturbation sin? What about non-missionary positions? Oral? Anal? Dominatrix? Stuff like that. These are the questions people want answers to.
I oughtta know. I’ve spent ten years getting paid to answer people’s theological questions. And fifteen years in youth ministry.

Mark Driscol is a phenomenal communicator, a brilliant writer, and an excellent theologian. You won’t find anyone out there more committed to properly understanding and communicating the truths of scripture. His ministry is in the most unchurched city in the U.S. An incredibly high percentage of his 8000 church members were unchurched before they attended Mars Hill. His ministry is to be commended. His doctrine is solid and conservative. He takes contextualization to a level we have not seen done successfully by others. These methods are what make him a lightning rod for criticism. His biggest critics are self righteous religious hypocrites. They are the ones who don’t know how to relate to lost people because it involves crossing their self imposed moral code (phariseeism) that is above and beyond scripture. I find him to be a breath of fresh air and a voice that we will look back on one day as a man used by God for a spiritual awakening in America. He’s not perfect and I don’t agree with him on everything but he is as good as there is in contextualizing the gospel for a generation that has otherwise left the church for dead.
I am a huge fan of Mark Driscoll and his ministry at Mars Hill in Seattle, WA. His church planting ministry, Acts 29, is really amazing as well. He is theologically solid, orthodox, Reformed (even). I think his “edginess,” furthermore, has brought the great truths of the gospel to many people who otherwise wouldn’t have darkened the doorway of a church or given an evangelist the time of day. That’s my two cents anyway.
I am one of the pastors at an Acts29 church plant in Atlanta and we would not be having the success we are having without the help of Driscol.
I smell fanboys!
You caught me red handed Dane
I’ll more or less echo the Dane: I don’t mind him. I mean, he’s not really my cup of tea, I have some problems with his philosophy of ministry, but I don’t really find him offensive.
