Podcast #53: Michael Jackson and Adulterous Leaders

This Week: We almost didn't want to talk about Michael Jackson's death this week. So many people have repeated one another's thoughts over and over, and the news has over-reported the story to the point that I'm pretty sure most of you groaned at the subject for the week. In fact, I'm impressed you're even reading this. We tried hard, though, to discuss the subject with a little bit of objectivity. We took a step back from the situation, saw what others were saying, and we spent most of our time … [Read more...]

Sanford and Sins: Public Figures and Private Infidelity

In American Politics, the last two weeks did not go well for the institution of marriage. No, a court did not rule to create homosexual marriage, nor did any state pass a similar law. Instead, two heterosexual men—South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford and Nevada Senator John Ensign—revealed their participation in adulterous relationships. While neither man left his political office, both quickly resigned their leadership positions within the Republican Governors’ Association and the United States … [Read more...]

Should We Feel Great About Proposition 8?

California's Proposition 8, a ballot initiative making same-sex marriages illegal, just nicked by in November. I'm pretty sure that outcome, and everything that flows from it - starting with this week's filing in federal court - is going to lead a lot of Christians to regret what they engaged in during the campaign.Last fall I was of the mind that Christians in California needed to be politically engaged, but abstain from the Proposition 8 vote. I read (and heard) plenty of arguments on either … [Read more...]

God and Mammon in the Big Easy

I leaned against the windowpane, the road rushing past below me. Never had I been within 1,000 miles of New Orleans. Yet here I was, riding in a shuttle to a conference in the French Quarter. It was a breezy March morning - the thick haze of summer heat still months away. As the shuttle hastened toward the hotel, I noticed a plethora of advertisements for everything from sports to gambling to, well, whatever. Plenty to buy, plenty to see I was told.Upon arriving I left my bags at the hotel and … [Read more...]

Stem Cells, False Dilemmas, Straw Men, and Bandwagons

On March 9, 2009, President Obama signed an executive order allowing government funding for new lines of Embryonic Stem-Cell Research. In doing so, he reversed President Bush's policy. That policy allowed current lines of research to continue while denying any government funding involving the destruction of new embryos. Many of us did then and continue now to see such destruction as the taking of human life. Our President then painted a hopeful picture for the research. He spoke to its … [Read more...]
