7 Of The Most Famous Bible Scriptures

7 Of The Most Famous Bible Scriptures May 28, 2015

The Bible is the most widely read and best-selling book ever written, and it has been a source of guidance and hope for millions of people over the centuries. Individuals and churches have been encouraged and relied on its truths as well. Because it is God’s written word, it is inspired and anointed, and useful for teaching, correcting and training in truth (2 Timothy 3:16). Here are 7 of the most famous Bible Scriptures in my opinion.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Famous Bible Scriptures

I have included this verse as one of the seven most famous Scriptures, because it summarizes the good news of the Gospel, and it has been memorized by almost every Christian around the world. It is so well known that even Tim Tebow, the popular football player, wrote its reference on his face to draw attention to Christianity a few years ago. T-shirts, mugs and every other type of merchandise also carry this Scripture or reference. This verse is a powerful affirmation of God’s love for us, as well as describing Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice on the cross—all to reassure us of our eternal salvation in heaven.

Matthew 6:9-13 “Pray then like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’”

This passage in Matthew is often referred to as “The Lord’s Prayer,” when Jesus is teaching his disciples how they should pray. It is among the most famous Scriptures, because almost every Bible-believing church and denomination around the world recites this passage during their services on Sunday. It is also quoted in weddings and funerals, mealtimes and bedtimes, convocations and prayer assemblies. For some, this prayer is a liturgical part of their worship service, and for others it represents a powerful communion with God that changes them as well as their circumstances.

Psalm 23 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Another very well known passage of Scripture is Psalm 23. It is often read and quoted during times of extreme struggle and suffering—especially after the death of a loved one. The psalmist, King David, wrote these beautiful words that seem to reach deep down into our souls to uplift and encourage us even in the midst of our darkest hours. These six, short verses have brought more hope to grieving families in almost every language then most any other Scripture.

Genesis 1:1-3 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

As Christians, we believe that God is the great “I AM.” When he speaks, the world trembles, and things are created and changed according to his voice. These first few verses in Genesis are the beginning words written in the Bible, and they declare God’s sovereignty and power. When he spoke, “there was light.” Therefore, these well known verses are among my top seven famous verses, because they have been ready by every single person that has ever opened the Bible to read it from the beginning.

Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

This verse is short and sweet, but it packs a strong punch. It has been memorized and quoted many times by everyone who has endured trials and tribulations during their lifetime, as it reminds Christians that the Lord is their strength and their salvation. Situations may seem impossible to the human eye, but through God we can do all things.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

Frequently shared—in written or spoken form for weddings and graduation ceremonies—these verses found in Jeremiah are among the most famous verses in the Bible as well. It is almost impossible to go to a Christian bookstore or card shop these days and not find one that quotes this passage, as they are very popular today. Everyone is looking to God’s word for hope and encouragement and a sense of destiny. These words bring life to all situations and a promise for the future.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

My final choice for famous Scriptures is this one found in the book of Romans. I chose it because of its popularity as well. Christians everywhere have often “leaned” on this verse to get them through difficult and seemingly impossible situations. Knowing that God loves us is amazing, and isn’t it even more encouraging to know that when we love God, he works everything together for our good?

CONCLUSION

These are my choices for the top 7 most famous Scriptures, because they are among the most well known, quoted and read around the world in my opinion. One of the things many of the verses on this list have in common is that they also bring hope and faith to those who need encouragement. God’s word is powerful and life giving, and it is constantly changing lives. That is why I try to read it every day for myself.

God has been good to me over the years, and I have much for which to be grateful to Him. First of all, I feel blessed to be the pastor’s wife of a thriving church in northern Michigan and the mother of four amazing grown children. It is also very rewarding to be a Christian author, editor and translator for the Kingdom of God. Some of my favorite pastimes include supporting my children’s contemporary Christian band ONLY9AM, singing on the worship team at church, traveling, and connecting with family and friends via social media. When I am not working, I love spending time with my family and especially with my precious three-year-old grandson.
