Top 7 Bible Verses About Feeding The Hungry June 29, 2015

If there is one thing that the Christian community might be known for, it’d charitable deeds like feeding the homeless. Whether it’s a church that organizes local mission trips at soup kitchen, a youth group deciding to volunteer by making lunches and handing them out, or an individual Christian who decides to start up a non-profit—it seems the Christian community has done some things right in this area. This is not to say, of course, that there have never been problems or misdeeds within Christianity, of course; but what I am saying is that, stereotypically Christians are known for trying to take care of the homeless. The reasons for this are really a variety: inspired by Scripture, seeing a need and wanting to fill it, movement by the Holy Spirit, or even wanting to take care of someone less fortunate since God took care of them. Whatever the reason is, there is a good Scriptural backing for taking care of the homeless and hungry. Here are the top 7 Bible verses about feeding the hungry.

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” James 2:14-18 ESV

“Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’” Matthew 25:37-40 ESV

“When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.” Deuteronomy 24:19 ESV

“Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.” Matthew 14:15-21 ESV

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” Proverbs 19:17 ESV

Bible verses about feeding the hungry

“Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.” Proverbs 22:9 ESV

“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Romans 12:19-20 ESV

Conclusion

Scripture is clear about the need to help those less fortunate. Instead of just having an abstract faith, it’s important to put it into practice in tangible ways, such as feeding and taking care of those who are hungry and cannot do it themselves: homeless, widows, orphans, etc. Anybody in need deserves our compassion, if for no other reason than the Lord being compassionate to us.
