Top 7 Bible Verses For When You Feel Defeated

Top 7 Bible Verses For When You Feel Defeated July 7, 2015

There are times in our lives when we have been hit by blow after blow, and we feel crushed and exhausted. During these occasions, it is easy to lose all hope. God does not want us to live out our daily existence discouraged or hopeless, so he has given us his word as a source of blessing and encouragement. With that in mind, here are my top 7 Bible verses for when you feel defeated.

Deuteronomy 20:4 “for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.”

We all have battles that we fight even in today’s modern world. It might not be a physical war against other human beings, but rather our struggles may be against our own thought patterns, bad habits or weaknesses. Sometimes these skirmishes revolve around confronting difficult situations and circumstances that we face that are out of our control. Whatever the case, though, this verse in Deuteronomy fills me with hope and courage. Here the author reminds us that it is the Lord who goes with us to fight for us against our enemies—whoever or whatever that may be. God not only fights for us, but he also gives us the victory. How encouraging is that!

Deuteronomy 28:7 “The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.”

Here is another great verse to help us overcome those feelings of being defeated. The Lord will conquer all those who fight against us. As his children, we are privileged to have his covering, his protection, and his guidance with us continually. So even though we might be attacked physically or emotionally by one way or another, God’s word assures us that our enemies will flee before us in seven ways.

I Chronicles 29:11 “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.”

Jehovah God rules and reigns over everything, and this verse reminds us of his greatness, power, glory, and majesty. He created the heavens and the earth, and it all belongs to him. So we truly do not have anything to fear. The victory is already his, so no matter what place we are in life we should not succumb to feelings of defeat.

Matthew 19:26 “But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

One of the most encouraging thoughts for me is to know that even when things seem the bleakest, that God is in control. He starts from a point of victory in every situation, and he easily overcomes what feels impossible to us. Every time I have struggled with feelings of loss and defeat, this verse quickly comes to mind, and my hope is restored.

Romans 8:37 “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

Bible verses for those that feel defeated

God loves us—this is so true! The Bible tells us that God loves us so much that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him will not perish (or be defeated), but instead will have eternal life with him (John 3:16). This verse in John along with this verse in Romans both give us the ultimate hope and knowledge that we are more than conquerors through Christ, because of God’s love for us.

I Corinthians 15:57 “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

This verse is another of my top seven verses for when I feel defeated, because it clearly states that God gives us the victory in all circumstances through our Lord Jesus Christ. And because this is the case, we can and should be grateful and give thanks to God for his deliverance. This verse correlates perfectly with what the prophet says in Isaiah 54:17a that “no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed…” We can triumph over any setback, because the Lord is on our side.

I John 5:4 “For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”

Once we become Christians, we are joined together into the family of God. We are then given the incredible gift of faith to strengthen us and give us hope for the future. And this verse reminds us that everyone—not just some—can in fact overcome the challenges of the world. This is an incredible gift, because it reminds us that we can indeed overcome any discouragement or loss.

CONLUSION

In conclusion, God does not want us to ever succumb to feelings of defeat and despair in spite of the crushing blows we receive on a regular basis. He has given us his powerful word full of encouragement and hope to strengthen us instead. Ultimately, his will for us is that we live our lives in victory.

God has been good to me over the years, and I have much for which to be grateful to Him. First of all, I feel blessed to be the pastor’s wife of a thriving church in northern Michigan and the mother of four amazing grown children. It is also very rewarding to be a Christian author, editor and translator for the Kingdom of God. Some of my favorite pastimes include supporting my children’s contemporary Christian band ONLY9AM, singing on the worship team at church, traveling, and connecting with family and friends via social media. When I am not working, I love spending time with my family and especially with my precious three-year-old grandson.
