Top 7 Bible Verses About Your Appearance July 28, 2015

If we could only look in the mirror and see our true selves. What would we think of our reflection then? What if the person staring back at us, was the person God created us to be-the one he has always seen us as-rather than the physical presence we have spent so much time cultivating? Oh how beautiful we would feel. Not because of our looks, but because we could finally see Gods image reflected back in us. It’s all there right now, waiting for us to believe it. We may have to look closely. Push our faces right up to the mirror. Even squint a little. But when we do, we can see Jesus staring back. Read on for some of the best bible verses that speak to God’s appearance in our lives, and all of the ways it changes our own.

Luke 12:22-23 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.”

Worry only depletes us. Worry about our appearance forces us to draw inward, rather than outward as a reflection of God’s love. That love is bigger than the points of daily life that sometimes trip us up. If we forget that, we run the risk of pointing to ourselves, and away from the beauty of Jesus.

Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

If your self worth comes from possessions, it will be as fragile as the materials those possessions are made from. Even the finest dress, furniture, jewels, etc. can not stand up to the test of time. And your value will never be safe, because it lies in items that are not either. Building up others in the name of Jesus, is the way to secure a treasure that cannot be taken away. A treasure that awaits you, glistening and gleaming, when you walk through heaven’s gates. Place your heart there, where true security lies.

1 Peter 3:3-4 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

The terms gentle and quiet are not typically viewed as strong attributes in today’s society. More often, we are encouraged to loudly take what we want and use force to get what we need. To some, this is the modern definition of strength. 1 Peter 3 says that great beauty in God’s eyes comes from a gentle heart, and great beauty, from a quiet spirit. For when we quiet our own desires just enough, we are better able to see needs of others. We are better able to hear the voice of God, calling us beautiful.

Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

I can think of no other verse that better speaks to our appearance than this one. We were created in the image of God to do his work here on Earth. If we only remember this and nothing else at all, we cannot help but see our appearance entirely differently.

Colossians 3:12-14 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Fashion is fun and exciting because we can use it to transform ourselves. With every new look, we can become something different, until, ultimately, we find the one that feels the most like us. When we do the same with the attributes Christ has chosen for us, we also begin to transform. On a far deeper level, we change and grow, until we come to be the exact version of ourselves that we were meant to be. We discover that love for Christ, and love for others, is the perfect look.

Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Bible verses about appearance

Our outward appearance will always change. Our personality can only get us so far. But when we remain focused on the Lord and his ways, we gain a much more captivating beauty. One that is worthy of praise.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

If ever there was a question as to how God feels about our appearance, we find the answer in 1 Samuel 16:7. Samuel was sent to find a King. He was looking for someone who looked like one in stature. God told him instead to look for the one with the heart of a king. When Samuel was able to do so, he found David- a man after God’s own heart. God uses this same method to examine us. When our hearts are beautiful, we look like royalty to our own King.

Final Thoughts

The Bible tells us that God sees us differently than we see ourselves. He looks through our good hair days, fancy watches, and perfect outfits. He sees beyond our titles, definitions, and categories. He looks past all of it, straight to our hearts. He placed parts of himself there, and I think we are most beautiful to him when he finds that part of us beating hardest. This is what makes us pretty, handsome, successful, and accomplished. The evidence of our creator, living inside of us, exactly as it appears.
