Do Christians Believe There Is Life On Other Planets? September 1, 2015

Do Christians believe that there is life on other planets or that it’s at least possible? What are the implications of us finding life on other planets?

The Creator of All Things

Genesis 1:1 declares “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” and in Acts 17:24 Paul says “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.” Even the author of Hebrews writes “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands” (Heb 1:10) so it is abundantly clear that God is the Creator of all things including everything in the universe and so we “understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible” (Heb 11:3). The Apostle John gets more specific about just Who this Creator is in saying Jesus “created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (Rev 4:11b).

The Creator of All Life

God is also Creator of all life at it says in Genesis 1:20 “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens,” all plant and insect life and so God created all living things in every place and that included man and woman (Gen 1:26-27). So it was that “every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life” (Gen 1:30) and so “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). The Bible is clear; God created all things and all life, no matter where it exists.

The Creator of the Universe

Now, back to the creation of the universe, we read that God “alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea” (Job 9:8) “and the heavens are the work of your hands” (Psalm 102:25). He is “the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 115:15). Since we now know that “the Creator of the heavens…stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it” (Isaiah 42:5) then any life that exists on other planets must also be a creation of God. There are many Christians who believe that there might be life on other planets, whether it is highly intelligent or just simple bacteria, but that doesn’t change what we believe in the Word of God. God still claims to be Creator. Why does it matter whether there is life on other planets? That doesn’t diminish God’s creating it.

Conclusion

The conclusion is that God is Creator. He is the Creator of all things. He is the Creator of all life, no matter what place in the universe that it exists. It changes nothing as far as those who need to repent and trust in Christ. The plan of redemption is unaffected by anything that takes place outside of the Bible. Is there life on other planets? Maybe. It seems there is a good possibility. It doesn’t matter…God is still God and He is our Creator and our Redeemer, even if you’re on the far side of the unseen universe.
