Should A Christian Be A Republican Or A Democrat? October 13, 2015

Does the Bible give us an idea about whether Christians should be a Republican or a Democrat? Perhaps, even an Independent?

The Sovereign Supreme God

The Bible says of God that “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding” (Dan 2:21) and “He brings one down, he exalts another” (Prov 75:7). Clearly, God is sovereign over all the earth and where mankind rules, God overrules. He proclaims “If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it” (Jer 18:7-8) and God says I can “overthrow what I have built and uproot what I have planted, throughout the earth” (Jer 45:4b). Whatever party is in power, God is the ultimate Superpower. They think they might be in control but not even a sparrow falls outside of the knowledge of God (Matt 10:29) and even that is within the sovereignty of God (Rom 8:28).

If-at-any-time-I-declare

God is a…

Is God a Democrat or a Republican? Maybe He’s even independent. God is none of these manmade titles because God ultimately always does what He pleases and He puts into power those whom He has foreordained to. Sometimes, as God did with ancient Israel, He will place evil rulers in power as a way of disciplining the nation by poor or corrupt leadership. It seems that this is happening today but it has probably always been this way. God is not affiliated with any party although the highest percentage of Christians is Republican but it’s not like that everywhere in the country. Perhaps more Christians are Republicans because the Republican Party has customarily been more pro-life. Personally, that issue is worth infinitely more than all the other issues combined because “God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Gen 1:27). Since God is the Giver of Life, only He can take a life.

The Issue

There are a lot of issues that come up these days in politics. There’s the immigration issue, the economic concerns, foreign policy, the concern for national debt, and the list goes on but there is one issue I believe is most important to God of all those issues that come out during campaigns and it is the issue of life. God is pro-life; He is the author of life (Acts 3:15). If a believer were to rank the economy over the candidate’s belief on abortion, then they seem to show that money is more important than human lives. I don’t care if a person’s a Democrat, Republican, Independent, or another party, you’ve got my vote if you are pro-life. That is my issue. Everything else is light-years away as far as importance is concerned. Yes, God is sovereign but He wants us to be part of the sovereign plan of His. He uses us as a means to His ends and that means might be by voting pro-life. I am not discounting all the other issues but only emphasizing the difference between a human life and things! Things can be replaced; human life cannot.

Conclusion

Most American’s identify themselves as Christians but few of these pick abortion as their number one concern. They might have grown up a Democrat and have always been a Democrat but we can’t afford to strictly vote along party lines. We need to vote our conscience. What values does the candidate have? Does she or he support abortion or are they pro-life? I believe we should all vote our conscience and not just our party. It’s not about Democrats or Republicans; it’s about voting for those who would do the most good which could mean trying to support pro-life legislation.
