7 Helpful Bible Verses For The Single Father

7 Helpful Bible Verses For The Single Father September 24, 2016

Here are seven helpful Bible verses for single fathers.

Isaiah 40:30-31 “Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

Being a single parent, mother or father, is one of the hardest jobs on earth. There is rarely anyone to come along side of the single parent, so single mothers and fathers don’t have it easy at all. They must be both dad and mom, the breadwinner, the chief cook and bottle washer, nurse, and counselor, plus do all of the household chores. If you know of a single father, try to encourage him and give him all the prayers and support you can give.

Psalm 68:5 “Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.”

When single mothers read this verse, I believe it is probably very encouraging, but it should also be for the single father who has everything on his plate too and must even wash it. There are fewer things on earth more difficult than being a single parent, and so, if you know one, try to let God use you as a means to help and support them and encourage them as frequently as possible.

Deuteronomy 4:40 “Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.”

Parents, whether single or not, are charged with a huge responsibility, and that is to teach their children the decrees and commands of God. We know that these commands are righteous because their source is God Himself and there is no higher authority, but this command comes with a promise, and that is, “that you may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.” It’s a matter of cause and effect. Knowing God’s laws isn’t enough; we must live them out, but also pass this on to our children and our children’s children so that they too might live long upon the land.

Even-youths-shall-faint (1)

Isaiah 54:10 “For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”

This verse had great meaning for the Jews because they have been persecuted as a people, almost from the beginning. For the single father, it might feel like the mountains are departed and the hills have been moved, because there is so much upheaval in their lives. Yet God’s promise is that His “covenant of peace shall not be removed” because “the Lord…has compassion on you.” Take heart fathers; God has not changed. He is still bound to His own Word and will never leave you, or forsake you (Deut 31:6; Heb 13:6).

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

It’s so easy to say, “I understand what you’re going through,” but until you’ve actually gone through what they’ve gone through, you nor can I truly understand what this must feel like. Single fathers have often said that they feel like the whole weight of the world is on their shoulders, so come to Jesus. He can carry these heavy burdens and loads when we cannot. Only He can give you rest by taking His yoke upon you. This is the only way that you will truly find rest for your souls because, Jesus says, “my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

It all comes down to a matter of trust. You either trust the Lord or you trust in your own strength, but who can compare with God’s strength? The fact is we can’t straighten our own paths any more than we can lean on our own understanding because “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death” (Prov 14:12). We must see life through the eyes of faith, but also, we must acknowledge Him in all of our ways publically, and only then, can God straighten the paths that are crooked and difficult.

Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Single fathers, when things get hard, run to God because He is a refuge from the storms of life and He gives strength at the time you need it most, so truly He is “a very present help in trouble.” There is no time like the present to run to God, because He is waiting there. When we reach the end of our rope, we discover that God’s been there waiting for us, including single fathers who carry so most, if not all of the burden in their family. There is often no one else to turn to, so when you find your back is against the wall dad…run to Him because He’s your refuge and He will strengthen you when you are weak. What man can do that?

Conclusion

National statistics show that about 1 in 10 single parents are fathers, and as any single mother will tell you, it’s a titanic job raising a child or children all by yourself, however believers know God’s Word promises His children that “The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble” (Psalm 9:9). When you run out of energy, and feel like you can’t go on anymore, turn to the Book of Psalms, like Psalm 103 where God says, “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him” (13), because “he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust” (14), as “the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children” (17).
