Read more about “Not THAT Kind of Christian” by CLICKING HERE Lots of people either love God, or at least have a sense that there’s something bigger than us in the universe. Like me, they long for a more just world in which the poor are empowered, the planet is cared for, and where LOVE is the most important thing. Period. They might even see an inspiring example of that in Jesus. And yet they reject the label “Christian,” or... Read more

I’m going to be posting bits from my upcoming book, “A**hole Christian Survival Guide,” over the next month or so. The idea behind the book is that maybe we need to follow Jesus because all of us, at one time or another, can be real a-holes. The real problem arises if we think that being “saved” or accepting Jesus somehow offers us lifetime a**hole insurance. But the irony is that this misconception makes us even BIGGER a**holes. Find out more about the... Read more

I’m writing a new book and need your help. It’s a funny illustrated book with an edge, addressing two fundamental human realities: We all fall short of being perfect, or even who we wish we were or could be, and; We all share a basic losing to become better people. I do write this from a context of Christian culture, though it’s not strictly “about” or “for” Christians. I do, however, take on the problem of religiosity, which is when... Read more

To be clear, cohost Slim Moon totally didn’t take his pants off and show his butt on air; it just worked for the title. But since it’s a podcast we could also be lying. On the anniversary of 9/11 the CultureCastaways reflect on fourteen years since the attack on the Twin Towers and what it’s like raising kids who only know it as an abstract moment in history. And Amy lightens the mood with a rather unexpected interjection that would... Read more

When I was seventeen, my youth minister threw a Bible at me. Not long after that, my relationship with organized religion ended for a decade. Funny story, actually, at least the way I like to tell it. Help support the “A**hole Christian Survival Guide” campaign by becoming a backer. Learn more about how to survive the A-hole Apocalypse HERE.  Read more

In this second half of our live Homebrewed CultureCast from Marmoset Music in Portland, Oregon, we go from fears to laughs to group karaoke so fast it’ll make your ears spin. I mean, usually we’d say it makes your head spin, but you’re not watching it, just listening. So yaknow, it’s just the ears… What were we talking about? Oh yeah, Amy drops a triple crown of weekly fears on us and we force her to rank them so we... Read more

Not surprisingly, the reaction I’ve seen from advocates of marriage equality about County Clerk Kim Davis being sent to jail for refusing marriage licenses to same-sex couples has been, “Good!” But I’m not so sure. I understand the sense of vindication in having the power of law finally behind the judge’s ruling. But it also does more to hamstring the advancement of marriage equality than it does to help it. After all, it is the law of the land now;... Read more
