Shedding Blood in God’s Name

DEXTER (Season 2)

I’ll admit I’m a sucker for stories about the malleability of human morality. From the mob movies, where a guy can whack his cousin but better not show his Patron any “disrespect,” to justice-seeking serial killers like “Dexter,” there’s plenty of justified violence to be found. Where do such seemingly contradictory value systems come from? [Read More...]

Matisyahu’s Naked Face: Religious Exodus?

Matisyahu with his beard

When I shaved my head and posted photos on my Facebook page, I got about a dozen comments. Reviews were mixed, but the reality was that my follicles were giving up the fight whether or not I went along with their surrender. When Hasidic Jewish reggae star Matisyahu shaved his beard this week, it literally [Read More...]

Have a Little Faith: The Movie

It seems to me that someone who preaches about and studies the death and suffering of Christ so much the rest of the year would have a field day emphasizing this central tenet of their beliefs on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. But most of the churches in town that I know focus on this kind of image of Jesus have had slogans like ‘Christ is Risen!” on their signs for a couple of weeks already. [Read more...]
